I read today on the tivo newsletter that you can listen to Live365.com streams on the tivo now.

What version of the software do you need to do this? or is it another 3rd party thing like reading email, etc.

*Update* I got the new upgraded software the other night. They added the Live365 streaming, Podcasts, A few games, Yahoo photos integration and a few other new items.
It's a nice upgrade.

All it needs is a DVD burner.

Such an invention is not meant for man.

They already have tivos with dvd burners. And as much as I love my tivo, it's pretty far behind other PVR options. Nothing special.

examples?
MediaCenter, BeyondTV, etc.

Oh yeah, my MCE box is quieter than, almost the same size as, cost about as much as (including TiVo's lifetime sub) and about as stable as my TiVo. And it does a WHOLE hell of a lot more.

Believe me after spending forever trying to set up an HTPC, you will appreciate the Tivo even more. It is very reliable and hassle free for all that it can do. No bs like computers always have.

My MCE box took some work to get up and running, but since then has amazed me with its stability. Plus just about any problems can be fixed with a restart which only takes a couple of seconds compared to the agonizingly long restart time of my TiVo.

Can you list your MCE rigs specs?

I got an Overture for $30, an Asus hardware decoder card for $19, 512mb memory for $20 AR, DVD burner $10AR. So all I need is MCE, MB, CPU and HD. :) Actually, I have MCE already as work bought it for me.

Athlon XP 2600
Some Socket A Motherboard
1.25GB PC2700 or whatever
80GB system drive
250GB dvr/media drive (soon to be replaced with something larger, probably external firewire raid array with ripped DVDs)
AGP GeForce 6200 + Component dongle
DVD burner
PVR150 tuner + TWC SA3200HD STB (set up for firewire channel change and recording)
DVico Fusion5 USB OTA HDTV Tuner
CL Audigy2 (USB model)
Antec Aria case with some more powerful Antec 120mm fan I bought at Best Buy

NVidia dvd codec
Weather plugin
MyMovies DVD database plugin
GameEx emulator plugin
etc

Samsung flat tube 32" EDTV (MCE downscales HDTV pretty good), hopefully soon to be replaced with 37" 1080p LCD
Onkyo 6.1 HTIB
Logitech Harmony 680
Logitech Wingman wireless controller

I plan to replace the current box with a Dell system, TV with a large 1080p LCD and add the RAID array when Vista comes out.

Examples of what non-tivo competitors can do that is so useful? When I checked a year ago there was nothing even remotely useful, unless I were to start downloading divx versions of tv shows illegally, and their software was years behind tivo in terms of tv recording features.

Yep, XP Media Center makes Tivo look like a playtoy.

Doesn't sound like you're doing something right.

Aside from the problems that I had with one TV card, which were unfixable, and related to the card itself... I haven't had any problems with the PC.

Setting it up is easy. If you don't like doing that kind of stuff, what are you doing on AT?

What if I am only interested in PVR functionality and not music/photos sharing?

Wouldn't an HTPC + BeyondTV or SageTV be better than MCE?
