new title: Lions fined 200k b/c they didn't interview a minority coach...

I agree, totally. But hey, that's the way it is now. You have to interview people who are less qualified, because of their race/background/etc.

I believe any race can do any job equally well. But I think it's a farce when you *have* to hire someone who's less qualified to look "Diversified" and "Politically Correct".

Not that I care about the Lions, but come on...you hire the best man for the job. Mariucci has experience, and while I won't call him great, he;s better than Morinhweg, or whoever that guy was. Why mandate minority interviews if it's a farce anyway? This just seems like more PC bullshit to me. Argh.

Man this stuff is crazy. To think for a minute that a highly competitive, highly visible entity like an NFL team would hire a less capable candidate because they aren't black is stupid and insulting. If the Lions knew who their man was, then to force them to waste their time and that of the minority coaches is a farse.

This policy is not going to get more minorities hired. It will ensure more minorities get interviewed, but not necessarily hired.

What a joke.

How will any minority coaches every attain the status of "best guy for the job" if they never get a chance to coach in the first place?

As usual, with issues I don't feel that strongly about, I can see both sides of this one. Frankly the picture of a violent sports league where the players are predominately minorities but none of the people in positions of power are is pretty disturbing when you think about it, no matter what the compensation might be. But what's the big deal it's just a football team that needs a coach.

Let them show they are the best person for the job, the same way the other coaches do.

Personally, I think it's more important that colleges hire more "non whites" or more assistant coaches are. I mean, what NFL team hires someone without a track record of success of some kind? If they are good and deserve the job, then they need to get the opportunity to prove it. Make a case that an NFL team can't deny.

That's true that they won;t attain the staus, but the NFL is not the place to begin a coaching career, at least not at the head coach position. I agree that there should be more starting their careers at the lower levels; this, in turn, would produce more NFL-caliber coaches.

It is pretty lame. The rule was made with good intentions, but Mariucci is a great coach and that's who the Lions wanted.

Still, the Lions knew the rule, and they should have just kept trying to interview at least one minority candidate before officially hiring him.

LAME. Mariucci is a proven coach ... if they want him, then interview him. What good does it do if they're after Mariucci but they're required to interview a minority coach.

Lame is right.

The fact is that Millen told all prospective interviewees that it was Mariucci's job if he wanted it. Dennis Green turned down an interview because of that.

This is so stupid.

I was going to point that out. They offered an interview to a minority, and it was turned down. No reason to go any further, anyway, if you know who you want to coach your team.

they wanted Mariucci and they got him. no need to interview anyone if you are set on one. its a waste of time and money. also compleatly pointless.

And what's so great about Dennis Erickson's record ?

People hire people they fell 'comfortable' working with.
That's one of the reasons you see almost no black coaches hired.

The point of the rule is to prevent it from ever being "Mariucci's job if he wanted it".

Why did they hold official interviews to begin with? Or does every job in the USA require you to hold interviews?
When Bill Gates stepped down as Managing Director of Microsoft the job just passed to monkeyboy. Let's sue them for not interviewing 6 billion people!

Ah yes, more paternalistic 'uplifting' by Uncle Whitey.

I've never even heard of the rule. You must patronizingly give one poor 'need a helpin hand from da massah' minority an interview, even though you already know which coach you want because you've been scouting him for months and he's one of the best in the league.

What other appropriate way to describe the 'obligatory minority interview' except a 'nuisance'?

"Hi, you aren't going to get the job, but come on in and we'll pretend like you got a chance, anyway, wasting both your time and ours."

This must be what they call "progress".

This is getting fvcking nuts.

<rant>

I HATE EVERYTHING that distinguishes any difference between races or changes life, society as a whole, or ideology for certain people based on race. I hate it all. In today's society, the slightest OOPS and someone pulls the fvcking racist card --and logic and reason go out the window.

"Racism!? Oh no! He MUST be guilty! Because NOBODY would EVER dare accuse someone else of being a racist unless they REALLY WERE a racist! That means that they REALLY ARE a racist and therefore are guilty until proven innocent! OMFG!!!1!11one"

:|

Everyone is THE SAME. Race has NO BEARING on anything WHAT SO EVER. Your race doesn't automatically give you "soul." It doesn't make you rich. It doesn't mean that you're automatically a martial artist master. It doesn't make you cooler with the ladies because you have a huge cock. It doesn't mean that you are oppressed and deserve ANYTHING more than what you work for to EARN. It doesn't mean that you deserve an interview more than the other guy (who just happens to be white, yellow, pink, blue, or fvcking polka dotted.

Get over it.

</rant>

Well, unless you're French. Then you're fvcked.

But the entire reason that Mornhinweg was fired was due to the fact that Maricucci became available.

And what if Mariucci WASN'T interested in the job? Millen said that five minority candidates turned down interviews. They certainly weren't going to get the job if Mariucci turned it down.

I agree with you that this patronizes minority candidates. Why make the team interview someone they aren't interested in hiring and waste the time of the prospective coach?

I do. This is just going to get worse and worse until racist assholes take over this country yet again. But this time, the colors will be reversed.
Reverse racism hasn't effected me one bit (I'm willing to bet it hasn't effected 99% of white Americans)
