Toyo Proxes 4s
Sweet looking tread, awesome all season tire. I currently ride on the Toyo Proxes T1-S, and they're awesome tires. The T1-S is more of a dry high performance tire (it does awesome in the wet too), but the Proxes4s are more of a all season tire.

I have stock 16 inch wheels with quattro. I live in upstate NY so there is a decent amount of snow. I guess my question is what's the difference between a true performance and all season tire. I will not be using snow tires in the winter. My car is not chipped and I don't drive it that hard...
Summer sports tires are not going to work in snow at all due to their not-so-knobby tread, and soft compounds.. you need something maybe similar to the tire mentioned above (the Toyo) I was going to recommend a Bridgestone or Yokohama tire, but I only know the summer performance tires, I don't know all seasons. 🙁

Do you live in an area where it snows? If so then the only tire I'll recommend is the BF Goodrich Traction T/A. H or V speed depending on how you drive.
If you don't live in an area where it snows then the Bridgestone Potenza RE950 or the Bridgestone Turanza LS are good choices.
Edit: Saw you said Upstate NY. Get the BF Goodrich Traction T/A's. There is no better 4 season tire. I have them on my car and when I was driving in NH last month there were cars slid off the road everywhere but I didn't have any problems at all.

I heard some good things about the Traction T/A's... I may go for those or the Goodyear ComforTreds..... I guess I should worry that they're not true 'performance' tires.... I'm sure I wont have problems cornering. My local dealer doesnt' have Toyo's, but thanks for the advice.
It depends on how hard you want to corner
I like being able to pin myself against my door as I corner, and some good tires are needed for this.. but for regular spirited driving, any decent all season does the job OK. before I went to a set of performance tires, my Eagle RS-A's were fine until I knew what a good tire really was. so you might be just fine with the tires you are looking at.

I just put a set of Michelin Pilot Sports on my wife's Maxima 225/50WR-17. They are simply the best tire for that car IMO. Cost me close to a grand for a set of 4 though.

My car came with Michelins and I haven't been impressed.... If they didn't give me any problems I'm guessing a good all season/touring BF or Goodyear will be fine.
Reviews on the Assurance ComforTred were good all around except for 1 thing... some people have been complaining about lower gas mileage...never heard of that before.. is that possible?

Yeah, we had lower end Bridgestones on the Maxima when we bought it new in 2003. Those tires suck horribly, especially in the rain.
I'm a firm believer in not cutting costs when it comes to tires. Get the best tire you can.

That was it and yes, they are crap. We suffered with them long enough. With all the rain we've had this winter I decided it was time to change them. They didn't even last 30k miles and they got progressively worse as the tread wore down.
