I was wondering if you guys can help me with the situation I am having...

I have an old computer lying around, and I want to revitalize it to make it a somewhat fast and decent computer w/ very minimal $$$...

Here's what I have...

Pentium II Pro (i think? or just regular PII) 400mhz
Abit BH6 Motherboard
Viper V550 AGP Video Card and/or NVidia Vanta AGP
Some UDMA/66 5400rpm 6.4gb Hard Drive (but Abit BH6 only supports UDMA/33, problem?)
2 x 64MB PC100 SDRAM

Right now it's running fairly slow compared to my other two running 550 Celerons w/ 128-256MB RAM...

Could anyone suggest anything to make this old computer run up to par? I think that a new hard drive controller might help? or...? any suggestions, please.

Thanks

Depends what you need the performance for.

If it's games, I would grab a new video card. Oh wait, that is what I did. :)

I have the same board, I'm running a celeron at 450 (about to upgrade to a overclocked 633@950). Grab yourself a GeForce2MX 32mb board.

Makes a world of difference in games. Well, did for me anyhow.

Pretty much, all I really need it for is just for it to run fast.. :) I'm not so much into playing games on THAT computer... it's more of a computer that I can install weird stuff on, and not have to worry about the overall performance of the computer, or whether or not it will crash or die on me the next day.

You say you are running a Celeron? Abit BH6 supports that? And you are planning on getting an overclocked CPU? for how much? Did you happen to purchase another controller card so u get UDMA/66 rather than the 33? Which of the two video cards are better? Viper V550 AGP, or NVidia Vanta?

Sorry for all the questions, Im just trying to get things clear in my head.. :)

thanks alot,

I'd recommend getting a slocket, like the IWILL Slocket 2, so you can plug in a current Celeron II or P3. Then a video card upgrade, a card based on the GeForce2 MX would be a really good deal.

Slocket? I've heard of that term before, so basically it's an adaptor or converter for a CPU? How much do those run for? I've read someplaces that the manufacturer or type of slocket is crucial in this process because of its obvious importance. Which slocket would you recommend? And about how much would that set me back?

Do you think getting a new video card would help in the speed of the computer? My only purpose for that computer is just to tweek and play with the settings, registry, install new OS's, etc. I was planning on getting a new video card for my new machine, possibly Radeon 64MB DDR, but im not too sure yet.

So far, no one has recommended purchasing a new HD controller or a new HD at all? Would that not help at all? or memory??

Thanks for the feedback, I greatly appreciated. If you have the information about the slocket, that would be great.

thanks
