I just received a new Thunderbird 900Mhz CPU + ASUS A7V motherboard. They forgot to include the fan and heatsink in the package. I couldn't resist, so I installed the whole think without the fan/heatsink. When I turned it on, the screen showing the GeForce video card appeared but it stoped there and nothing happened. While doing some modifications on the dip switches I turned the system on/off about five times but never got it to boot past the video card screen. Is this because I don't have a fan conencted to the CPU or did I damage the CPU(which doesnt make sense otherwise it wouldn't boot at all)?

Also there were no beeps from the speaker so I guess that the RAM is OK.

Thanks is advance.

some motherboards won't post without a fan connection.

on a side note...DON'T EVER RUN YOUR SYSTEM WITHOUT A HEATSINK/FAN CONNECTION!!!

Hm... i suggest not turning on any computer without a fan, but especially the thunderbird processors. They run HOT!!! I have heard that burn out after running them for 5 seconds without fan and heatsink. Hope you didn't do any permanent damage...

A 1Ghz T-bird will toast itself in less than 7 seconds without a HSF attached. If I were you I wouldn't get your hopes to high. Try RMAing it back to the place you purchased it from. Good luck.

Forgot to include a Heatsink/Fan? I think you probably bought an OEM bare CPU. Those don't come with them, you must provide that. I'm with the rest of the gang here, you should never start a computer without the proper cooling installed. I think you may have toasted it. :(

Hopefully you started with a freshly formatted Hard drive...always helpful to reinstall OS when you install new mobo...good luck there.

You have probably damage the processor ,NEVER INSTALL & RUN A THUNDERBIRD WITHOUT PROPER COOLING,anyway just send it back for a replacement & make sure next time you have the heatsink/fan installed before you switch it on,the Taisol CEK733092 is recommended for SocketA & cheap to buy, so now you have no excuse.
