Old Thread got toooooo long.
HOT! Box AMD Duron @950.

Here's from the first post from RobTV.

Thanks to Zapod's post at Fat Wallet:
http://www.fatwallet.org/messageview.cfm?catid=18&threadid=6210

AMD has now fully locked Duron's by removing the multiplier pins from the bottom of the CPU. Unlike their other attempts at locking, this one looks permanent. Luckily, most CPU's available today still have all pins intact. In a couple weeks or a month at best, I suspect that unlockable Durons will all be gone. This means that in the short future, if you want a 700mhz or 900 mhz cpu, you will have to pay the 700mhz or 900mhz price. Remember how quickly the supply of K6-III's ran out, and how they are nearly double the price, if you could find one.

The CPU's now being shipped from Buy.com, are not locked and are fully clockable. Using a $30 off $150, you can get 2 Duron 600's delivered for under $140. These are Retail Boxed units, with heatsink and a great fan, as well as a 1 or 3 year warranty (unsure of which). Zapod has posted that his 600mhz buycom units easily run at 950mhz, and even boot into Windows and using Sandra shows 1000mhz!!

Since sellers at eGay are getting $69.00 for OEM versions, + shipping, without heatsink and fan, you should have no trouble getting rid of the second CPU that this deal requires you to buy. It is also a fairly safe bet that in a month, you should be able to sell the unlocked CPU for well more than what you paid, since AMD will no longer be supplying unlockable CPUs.

Microbarn.com has the Abit KT7 motherboards for as little as $135, and $157 for the Raid version.

Slightly over $200 total for performance that is around a PIII 1Ghz.

Edit:

So far as it seem that most are able to reach at least 850 and 900 easily with the lucky ones reaching 950 and 1G.

As mention in another thread (Cheaper Price), there seem to be pretty good price at Onvia using the current $25 off

oh o. This thread will probably be locked, but who cares, I mean isn't 408 posts easy enough for anyone to load? [I have a cable modem] :)

NECX.com has ASUS A7V for $135 shipped(using $25 instant coupon you know here to find). It is not as easy to set multiplier as the Abit version(DIP switches), and has no ISA slots. But it does come with ATA/100 and supports 8 IDE devices. Would be good for any budget OCers.

hows everybody's expierence with microbarn? I had got a mobo from them back in april. That mobo was bad with unstable voltage. I sent it back to them. They replaced it but they still charged me some $12 extra beside te shipping cost saying there was nothing wrong with the old mobo.
you have been warned...

I bought my KT7 from microbarn for the duron. Good service, nothing wrong with the product. Received my motherboard even before my cpus arrived. I think they have the cheapest prices on the KT7 right now.

Just as an fyi, I believe the $25 coupon at Necx is expired. There is a $20 off $100 coupon out there though. I ordered this mobo last night from them with two day shipping(only $8.95) and it already has shipped out. NECX from my experience is a class operation....:)

Are us lowly Athlon Slot A users screwed? Is there a Slot A to Socket A converter (similar to the FC_PGA converters?) that will allow me to use a Duron on my MSI Pro 7?

Or am I stuck with a dinosaur?

To say it again and again, and again... None of the AMD chips currently available on the market have had their pins removed! NONE of them. NOWHERE. If you read any of the hardware boards out there, you would have found out that the pictures and information about pins being removed was a hoax. Just a doctored photo and a bunch of misinformation. Just like one of those stock hoaxes, this too was false information snapped up by a group only too eager to believe the latest rumours.

So there should be NO hurry to go out and getan AMD chip before they "remove" any pins from them. There is no need to get your panties in such a large and convoluted wad...

On the flip side, AMD chips with copper connects (mostly T-birds) have been showing up in the market and have arguably better abilities to overclock with. 750mHz T-birds have been shown to go all the way to 1.1gHz. YMMV... This stuff can only get better, not worse...

blah blah blah...

What speed/type of memory do you need to run the 600 at 900?

PC100? or something else?

Copied from previous thread:

<< Also, don't sweat the other stuff like a case or additional cooling. A stock Computer Geeks $22 ATX case with 250w power supply, and the stock included Heatsink and fan, are plenty enough to run this at 900mhz, (896mhz@112x8 here, which is faster than running it at 950mhz@100x9.5), as stable as a rock. This is even with nearly every slot filled on the $135 Abit KT7 motherboard, including the power hungry Voodoo 3 3000 AGP. Zero problems or issues. Too many people are confusing this with previous CPU's like the Athlon which needed minimum 300w, or Celerons, which choke when ran at high temps. These Durons are a new breed, made to run HOT, HOT, HOT, without errors, and even a 225w supply should be enough for most users. With a CPU that cost $70 shipped, doesn't make sense adding $30+ for another heatsink, fan, grease and shipping, especially since they have a 3 year warranty using the stock HSF they give you. As long as you don't blow a hole in the CPU, AMD is not going to be able to see if you overclocked any that may fail. Besides, even though 1000's have been sold, defective CPU's, or units that fail, have not been popping up at all, unless they were run with NO heatsink and fan on them.

If you are having problems with the stock setup, then it is most likely conflicts with IRQ's or a Bios setting out of wack, and not temperature related. Check out the Abit newsgroup or KT7 FAQ'a at http://go.to/kt7faq for info on getting it working right.

Airduct asked:

<< robstv,
so you are actually using the compgeeks' $22 atx case? I was thinking of getting the onvia antec, but couldn't justify the $65 for the case (even though i hear it is of high quality and such). reassure me that the compugeeks' case fits everything in and i'll order it asap (hate to order something and find out it won't fit or there are heating problems, but saving 30 bucks or so to use elsewhere will be great, like ram and a cheap sound card)
>>

Yes, the $22 case works perfectly with this Duron + KT7 setup, except 1 of the 3 DIMM sockets allows the stick to touch the power supply, so you can safely only use 2 DIMM's.

LuZer asked:

<< Robs TV;
how hot are you running? idle / quake3?
>>

The Temperature that these are rated for, is at least 10 degrees Celsius higher than any other CPU previously available, so you can run them at least 10 degrees hotter than any CPU you owned before. Under heavy 3d gaming stress, mine is running at 66% of it's rated ability, but more important than that is it's stability. As you may know, the first thing that happens as temperature "starts" getting to high, is loss of stability, blue screens, crash to desktop, weird stuff. So again I repeat, at these settings, this is by far the most stable machine I have ever used in 15 years of upgrading every 2 months.

Memory used is from computer-show.com, and it was $98 in a deal posted here months ago (now it's $143) for 128meg PC133 Apacer stick w/Infinoen Chips. Easily runs at 112+33 or 145mhz in this system.

Fastest setup with stock hardware seems to be 112x8, or 896mhz.
Here is Sandra 2000 mem showing my overclocked 600 spanking a PIII 1ghz and T-Bird 1ghz
And, this is not modified, for high numbers, but is the way I use it everyday. Stock HSF, stock cheap case, no additional case fans or cooling required!!!

I'm new to this overclocking thing, never had to do it before w/ any of my other chips. I'm wondering are people getting the 600 Duron to 950-1gig or are they doing this with the 650 Duron. Basically, am I wasting my extra $15 by getting the 650 instead of the 600?

Thanks
Ken

FYI

I just received my week 23 Duron 700 from buy.com. It was shipped from Fullerton, CA.
All the L1 bridges are intact, no need to color the bridges for me!

I've overclocked Celerons before by setting FSB to 100 (300a/450, 566/850).

Could any of you that have successfully overclocked to 900 or so, post some recommedations for setting the motherboard. (I'll have a KT7).
I think you are maybe able to set FSB and multiplier, as well as voltage.
What FSB and multiplier work? I have PC100 memory, but heard PC133 is best.

Thanks,
