New ThinkPad T-Series Available.

Damn those suckers are expensive! I picked the T440p and gave it a few small upgrades (faster processor, more memory, NVidia graphics, HD+ display), and I ended up with a $1,750 system.

The good news is that I can get a similarly configured Dell XPS for way less than that, but I'd probably have to replace it in a year because it would fall apart on me 🙁
 
I've been waiting for this but I have a few questions I'm hoping someone can help me with?

Are both of the non-touch screens IPS? It looks like they are. Also are they matte? I personally have no use for touch.
Is the memory user upgradeable?
Is the hard drive a normal laptop size that can be swapped out?

If so then you can get a non-touch lower end model for a decent price and upgrade it later.
 
The shipping date shows up for late November which isn't too exciting.

Has your experience with the XPS line been that bad? It seems like it gets decent reviews.

When I upgrade the processor on the "thin and lights" that the HD graphics don't change with it. Aren't integrated graphics dependent on the CPU?

This like is tempting but a bit too clunky for me (trackpad, legacy vga port, a bit heavier then the competition).
 
I wish I could afford a new Thinkpad - no other laptop makes me yearn to own one. Hard to justify the price though when my X200S is still going strong after an SSD upgrade and a new 9-cell. Eight hours of battery life from a four year old laptop is pretty impressive.
 
Yeah these are pretty expensive, even configured with no SSD, I guess it's to be expected from the launch period and new chassis... But they are awesome machines.
 
Do you guys know that these laptops are a bit different from previous generations?

Now they have internal batteries, soldered RAM, no indicator lights among other changes. So they might not be the same Thinkpads you might be used to. Not very different but some differences. But still, nice machines.

Not sure about that. Mobiletechreviews on Youtube has done some reviews on latest laptops. I believe the XPS line is very solidly built.

My Dell XPS L502X is rubbish. The CPU fan and battery died within six months of buying it, and it has a ton of scratches from normal wear and tear.

Compare that my my old ThinkPad T61, which looked practically brand new up till the day when my wife and cat teamed up to spill a glass of ice tea into the keyboard 🙁

Really?

Our local store says the T440s has 4 GB RAM, and max RAM 12 GB, that would suggest 4 GB soldered and one SO-DIMM slot. And the machine has traditional HDD, which should be easy to remove and upgrade. That's not as good as two RAM slots (for 16 or 32 GB of greatness), but better than everything soldered-on.

I love the design. Totally. Black box of cyberpunk glory.

But. But. With aftermarket 256 GB SSD and 8 GB RAM, it costs more than rMPB 13" (with 8/256GB) here. That's a lot of money for computer that's worse in everything but having upgradeable RAM and storage, Ethernet, and a nicer design. Everything else about the Thinkpad is worse -- CPU, GPU, SSD, wifi, touchpad (come on, it's windows laptop). And you have to fiddle with linux to get reasonable OS.

Damn, I'm so sad now. But maybe you're lucky and Thinkpads aren't as overpriced wherever you live.

Yes, I should have been clearer: one of the two RAM slots is soldered so 12GB is the max on the T440s. I'm also not a huge fan of the internal batteries that are now installed. I like one internal battery - keeps things a bit simpler and easier to change when needed.

Grrr now I need to find some money for a new laptop. I love that the T440s has a 1920X1080 IPS screen as well as a decent consumer level GPU for some light gaming. I have always loved my Thinkpads but the GPU and LCD options have always been kinda weak. I guess I know what I'm getting myself for christmas this year! 🙂
 
If that 1920x1080 IPS non-touch screen is matte AND gets good reviews I think this will be my next laptop.
 
I was hoping as well for a better price and combo of features. I'll still keep an eye on it whenever Lenovo does their sales.
 
eh configured as how I want it is ~1.6k, can't justify the price right now. Might wait for black friday or call up my relative who works for ibm and see what an EPP discount will be on this.

I think I'm going to wait until Black Friday. I don't need it bad enough to pay the premium.

You are lucky with that nice featured laptop. Many or most manufacturers now only offer limited options of four and six cell batteries.
 
The 440p looks interesting. You can get quadcore one with dedicated GPU and matte FHD IPS for about $1500. That's not bad, with the sales and black fridays and other stuff you over-the-ocean people have.
