New term for groups of seti machines

Thanks guys. Could you make a fuss about V3 when it comes out? I'd like to trial it on a machine - it sounds impressive. I'm running a few Cu cpus now on standalones. I'm building the rack from Cel 566's on BX boards. I guess that they're not ideal for seti but they do a hot job on RC5.

I can't see me buying any xeons, they are of no real use to me in the real world.🙁

I was planning to get an A7V board (have it ordered) to run one of the new AMD's at as close to a Gig as I can get it. (Sorta gotta keep up with Engineer you know!) Will the 200 FSB be a huge boost to SETI?

Dantoo, we'll make a fuss about v3.0 for you.😉

I think it's going to be alot slower than the current v2.4. It will work on smaller chunks of data that will fit entirely into the 256kb of L2 cache of the cumine so the memory performance won't matter as much as before and there will be no need to buy a xeon or P2 for the cache size. This will speed things up alot.🙂 However the new client will be doing some added science calculations so it will slow it down.🙁 The added calculations are good for the project though.🙂 With cpu speed becoming more important and memory performance becoming less valuable I think crack racks will start to show more promise doing seti. Since raw power is what RC5 likes maybe we'll get a few converts.😀

I hate to say it but the Amd's even the ones with large caches have just plain sucked for seti. They are much improved with the 2.7 and up betas though. I think many of the times were cut in half with the new client.🙂 When 3.0 comes out Amd's should perform about as good as a P3.

The problem with the EV6 bus as well as Intel's asynchronous buses are it adds extra cycles to the memory access and slows seti down. I don't know about the board you mentioned since I haven't been keeping up with amd. I think the thing with seti isn't so much memory bandwith as memory latency.

It's good to see you have an interested in seti. Hope to see you crunching seti with a crack rack some day.🙂

Great response, everyone! I really like the whole "ships" thing. How about "ships" for individual computers, "fleets" for one person's ships and "The Armada" for the whole team? "Probe" could be used as a reference to asking a friend to bring their computer into your fleet, therby adding to The Armada.

I made contact with an alien and he did an anal probe on me. The sad part is I enjoyed it.🙂

That's how.😉

Damn, I'm trying to be witty and nothing comes to mind.
Could probe and assimilate be used interchangably?
Of course, an anal probe is an assimilation without permission.

The fleet and armada thing sounds like a winner.

Dantoo- Nice of you to look at SETI as well. Like you, my fastest machine is a Celeron 566@850. It rocks at RC5 and does a SETI unit in 7-7.5 hours. I have seen posts reporting P3Cu 650@866 doing SETI in about 5-5.5 hours I believe. So you can see the tremendous difference the cache and bus speed makes. Such a machine would be a very good economy SETI box and a darn good RC5 box as well, albeit at a slightly higher cost over the Celerons.

I like Fleet myself. The whole anal probe thing makes me think of "Fleet enema" though... We gotta get off that direction! 😉

Dantoo: Glad to hear you're interested in SETI. We'd love to have you with us!

Or combine the best of both worlds....

"Fleet probe"

Damn, I still cringe when I think of those damn Fleet enemas.

It appears most everyone likes the fleets, armada & ships idea.🙂 We can save the anal probes till we actually make a close encounter with ET.

Thanks for the welcome guys.🙂 I have strong commitments to RC5 that will keep me building up my fleet for some time. When we have that sucker down, I will immediately examine where we need to be putting that power.

Seems like we have a consensus - Just remember, one ship does not make a fleet! Float more ships! Glory to the Armada!

(ok, maybe I'm trying too hard, but I've never been a real rah-rah sort. This is fun.)

Reminds me of the battle against the Dominion? 😉 ,gathering our fleets for a mass strike 😉

BTW bad news ,I've lost the Athlon 700 24/7 ,& the PIII 700 @ 787 24/7has been put in its home ,so my 2nd PC is back to a PII 233 @ 280.Thats about 6WU's/day down 🙁 ,also my SETI partner (2nd in command?) has also sold on his 2 Duron systems 24/7 so thats another 4WU's/day down(they were slow for some reason) 🙁*sniff*.
So thats me down 10WU's/day to about 8WU's/day🙁 .

Still ,I had that Athlon for about 2 months! ,far longer than I expected 🙂

sig change has been made to reflect the new lingo.

heheh, ass1 i'm faster than you now buhwahahahah 😛
