I am building a new gaming system. I am tempted to go with an xp system to cut cost. Would a 64bit system be worth it. Is it that much faster?
 
Set your budget first and then think about equipment.

But to answer your question, the difference b/n a fast XP system and a mid-range A64 system is not very much. (less than a $100?) IMHO, if you're a gamer, yes, it's worth it.
 
don't be tempted by Athlon XP, if you're on a really tight budget the sempron for s754, then A64 s754 and best s939 A64.
Do not go for a socket A solution.

I may just have to take a hit and buy a sweet s939 sli board. I'mm sure it will last a while. It seems like the best path for upgrades.
 
All the 939 mobos should be able to do X2's. According to AMD, all that's needed is a BIOS update and you should be good to go.

Many motherboard manufacturers have already released new BIOS capable of running the X2s.

I don't understand: You have a $600 budget, but you're looking at dual-core CPUs and SLI? Socket 939 would be a waste of money, and you just plain can't afford SLI or dual-core.

You're basically stuck with a low-end s754 path--which isn't bad, mind you. Socket-754 Semprons are pretty darn nice.

Too true. My main point was that the X2 running on particular 939 mobo/X2 combo is implemented by the mobo manufacturer, not AMD, or MS, or someone else.
