New system won't power on

I just put together a Core 2 Duo system, and once everything is plugged in and hooked up, I go to power it on, and all it does is flash on for a split second, and off it goes. Now, if I unplug the 4 pin CPU power plug, it stays on, but of course there's no post. I've tried just about all I can think of such as switching the memory modules around, unplugging anything unnecessary, reseating the cpu cooler, and installing the stock intel cooler.

Unfortunately, I don't really have many components I can swap out. Only got the two sticks of memory, the one processor, and I'm just now making the jump to PCI-E so I've only got an AGP video card besides my new one. I know for sure it's not the power supply because I didn't take that out when I put my old system back in my case, and its powering it right now.

Any thoughts? The system I've put together is as follows:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6400
Biostar TForce 965PT motherboard
Evga 7900GTO
Crucial 10th Anniversary DDR2-667
WD Caviar SE 160gb SATA 3gb/s
TDK DVD-RW
Silverstone SST-ST50EF 500w power supply (dual 12v rails at 18 amps, 500w continuous)
Arctic Cooling freezer 7 pro

I've tried getting some support from Biostar but theres no support number, and all they've got on their page is a stupid support form that I filled out, but haven't heard back. I've got an RMA from Newegg, but I thought I'd give this one last ditch effort before sending it back. I'd really like to have this system up and running this weekend.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Edit: Also, there are no error beeps. Even if I don't plug the 4 pin cpu plug in.

CPU fan working/plugged in?

Also, how about the extra 6pin power plug for the Video card?

Have you tried with just one stick of RAM ? Try it with both one at a time if it doesn't work.

Oh, and welcome to the Forums :)

Thanks for the welcome :)

Yeah the cpu fan was working, on both the aftermarket cooler and the intel cooler. They were both seated completely as well. Although, after installing the stock intel fan I realized how much looser the freezer 7 pro fit.

I tried both sticks of ram at once, then one at a time in different slots, still wouldn't power on.

And, for the video card power cord, the power supply I have has 2 pci-e plugs, I tried them both, then I tried using a two molex to pci-e adapter, still nothing.

What would normally cause a system to just flash on then off immediately (stays on for less than a second if I have the 4 pin cpu plug in)?

The quick flash made me think that the CPU fan wasn't connected to the Motherboard fan sensor - the Computer will generally refuse to run if it doen't detect a correctly operating CPU fan.

An overheating CPU could cause similar issues as well, but I don't think it would heat up that fast.

Have you tried it with the Stock cooler in case the cooling isn't working correct?

Is your ATX power connector 20pin or 24pin? There are some differences with what is needed plugged in on the older types.

I thought it might be the cpu overheating as well, but with both coolers it does the same thing.

And the psu is 24 pin, but has a 20 to 24 adapter. I have the 20 pin adapter on it now as its powering my old setup.

Edit: also, with the freezer 7 pro, I used arctic silver 5, and when I pulled the cooler off, it was spread evenly. I used about a half a grain of rice size dot, as per the instructions on arctic silvers site.

Your Power connector may be the problem. The newer PSU's are 20+4 pin connectors.

I believe your's should still work, but I don't remember what exactly you need to hook up. There are several threads on here regarding this, though they may be about a year old. If I find one I'll post it on here.

Really? it says on the box that it's ATX 2.2, I thought those were the newest revisions?

Ahh. My plug is 24 pin. pretty much the same as that, in fact it even has lines on the last four pins, but its just one solid piece, and not removable like the one pictured. So it's got a 24 pin main power plug, and a 4 pin Cpu power plug as well. And both are plugged in and seated.

Thanks again for the help. I'm also trying to get through to both Intel and Biostar. I imagine Intel will email me back, but I'm not holding my breath on Biostar. It even says "Unfortunatly, we are unable to respond to all emails" after you submit your support form. Thats spectacular customer service....

I got it fixed! I'm running the new system right now!

It turned out to be one of two things. First, I decided to try running the system outside of the case. When I went to plug the cpu back in, I noticed two of the pins in the socket were bent completely flat. I carefully straightened them with a small knife, and got the cpu, cooler, and one stick of memory in. plugged in the power cables, and it turned right on!

The other thing, when I was installing the motherboard in the case, I noticed one of the little brass mount screws was right behind the board, not lining up with any of the holes. I took that extra one out.

Everything is running sweet now!

Thanks for your help and time. I really appreciate it.
