New System - Thoughts?

I've finally convinced my wife to let me build a new system - trust me, that wasn't an easy task. I built our current systems about a year and a half ago, and I feel that it's time for an upgrade. As such, I have been researching the system I'd like to build and have come up with the following components. I'm pretty much ready to order, with everything in my cart, but right now I am looking for a little feedback.

Please, if you have any feedback regarding my choice of hardware, I would love to hear it.

I'll be buying the following:

Case: NZXT Lexa ATX Mid Tower with 500 Watt Power Supply
Mobo: ASUS A8N-SLI Premium nForce4 SLI ATX
Video Card: eVGA Geforce 7800GT 256MB
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Manchester

I'll be transferring the following from my old computer

RAM: Corsair TWINX Dual Channel 1024MB PC3200 DDR 400MHz (2x512MB)

I'll also be moving DVD Burner, Floppy etc over too, as well as my three hard drives.

Thoughts? Improvements? I'm trying to keep within a budget of around $1100, and right now I have myself checked at around $1000 before tax and shipping.

If you'll gonna used it just for gaming I'll suggest an athlon64 4000+ but if you wanna do multi-tasking at the same time you should stick to that CPU. The rest are perfect.

1. NO SLI unless you plan on getting 2 videocards at the same time. You are overpaying for nothing.

2. get 2 gigs of ram (2x1gb sticks) - use savings from a cheaper motherboard

3. if you are into overclocking, I'd suggest Opteron 165 (and a DFI mobo perhaps).

First of all, thanks for the feedback! To answer some questions:

Yes, I do use my computer for gaming; however, I also work in the computer industry, and find myself using photoshop etc a lot, and multi-tasking quite a bit. It was a hard choice between a dual-core CPU, or a single one, since I do want more gaming power. But with that said, I feel that dual core processors are going to be used well in many new games (I.e. Oblivion) and are worth the investment.

Erasertone - yeah, it's an awesome case, and NewEgg is where I am looking at getting most of this stuff. : )

The only reason I am getting an SLI board is that in a month or so, I'll be purchasing another of the game graphics card - I need to put it off for a month to avoid wife aggro, though. 😉 Same thing with the extra RAM. We could afford it.... but, even though my wife is a gamer, it's hard to convince her that we should.

As for Overclocking... it's not actually something I am very experienced with, to be truthful. I know the basics, but for now I am going to try and avoid it for just awhile.

Thanks for all of the great feedback, people! I appreciate it. Please, do keep the feedback coming. : )

I wouldn't feel comfortable using some unknown brand PSU that comes with the case, I'd replace it with something known to be reliable such as Fortron, Enermax, Seasonic, Antec..

Yeah, I am having second thoughtd about the case. The interior doesn't look like it has the best airflow, and stock PSUs are a gamble. I may well go with an Antec PSU coupled with a Coolermaster Centurion 5 or Thermaltake XASER, Armor Series.

Case - good
Mobo - good, but DFI seems to be better for enthusiasts
Video - good
Processor - I'm definitely glad i went with my dual core opteron 165 over the X2 3800.. they are said to overclock much better and have 2 times the amount of L2 cache (2x512 vs 2x1024)
RAM - that'll be fine for upcoming months but 2GB would be desired for the new windows and some demanding games

good luck

Would definitely get a better PSU. If that means going with a different case, then by all means do it.
