Hi, just wondering if I could get some help in judging a new rig I am hoping to get...

INTEL® CORE® 2 DUO E6600
2048 MB CORSAIR DDR2-800 PC6400
ASUS® P5N32 SLI SE DELUXE: 2 PCI, DUAL LAN, SATA RAID
SATA II 250 GB HARD DISK @ 7200rpm 8mb cache (will let you know brand tmmrw...)
1024MB GEFORCE 7950GX2 (DUAL GPU) PCI Express + DVI + TV-OUT
600W Super Quiet Quad Rail PSU + 120mm fan & CPU Cooler (will let you know brand tmmrw...)

Priced at £1300

Just making sure it will run ok for the next 3 years 🙂 Also hoping it has some OC potential for the future?

Thanks in advance! 😛

Joe

Overall that looks very sweet.

I'm assuming your question has regards to the Corsair ram running correctly with the P5N32-SLI SE Deluxe board?

I can't answer the RAM question.

As for the 3 year question... yes. You MIGHT have to upgrade the graphics card towards the end of the lifespan (Just how good is a 5900 these days?) but all in all it looks very sweet.

Depending on what you're considering on accomplishing, I would consider another hard drive-250's are kind of small when you consider that some games are 8 gigs (and growing).

Firsthand experience here (trying to run a 2.66 P4 with two 4 gig drives lol) do NOT bottleneck yourself in HDD space... It's more frustrating than a computer that doesnt even boot...

Thanks for the responses! I want a SLI ready rig so I can add another GX2 later (or so I was hoping!) Just to confirm..is this possible?

Perhaps when Quad SLI is more supported (not sure about current support level now, actually... out of my price range 😛) it would work absolutely awesomely.
Installing them in that board should be no problem though. It is possible your PSU might be a little light to handle TWO of them... but that's a concern to address down the road when you buy that 2nd GX2 as PSU tech is expensive past that 600W barrier (or appears to be for me, anyway)

You seem to have a lot of money... wanna send me one of those boards 😀

*kicks his MSI thing...*

Hehe, don't worry, I have been saving a long time for this thing, at the moment I have 1.25ghz box 😱 Thanks for your help! Last question (I promise!) is Intel > AMD in this price range? Thanks 😀

Ps: How is the overclocking potential? If ya know...

Overclocking potential of the Conroe E6600 Is... amazing.

Intel STOMPS AMD in this price range.

E6600($400) > FX 62 ($900)

Your ram should support overclocking.

To be completely honest though, I would consider saving the "overclock" option until a bit later down the road. Keep that warranty fresh, and you're not losing much, if any, performance with a video card as beefy as that.

Awesome 😀 Thankyou so much...guess all thats left is to put in the credit card details...thanks again for helping me make my final decision.

At the moment I am using a lowish quality 17" screen, so (definately) need to upgrade soon, anyone know cheap places in the UK for good quality monitors (that work well with this graphics card.)

Thanks!

Joe

ps: Is there any advantage of going for a x1950xtx? Reviews show they are around the same perfomance...

Okay, firstly i doubt you'll ever want to put that 7950GX2 in SLI, the new generation of graphics cards is due out soonish and from past experience the price for the Nvidia graphics cards will not fall. As such it'll be a crap upgrade option.

The X1950 is probably going to be more compatible, the 7950GX2 has been known to have issues with the P5W line of motherboards. Also it's a single GPU option rather than a bastard offspring of SLI so it'll give you less trouble in games. However i think it's a bit slower too (not to mention that it's not for sale as of yet).

It's a very, very nice machine, i'm too lazy to check how much it'd cost to build it yourself but i suspect you're not being gouged too much.

Reason why I suggested the P5W DH is because SLI is still very new for C2D. If you really wanna get SLI, wait for the nForce 590 SLI Intel Edition. The P5N32 is based on older nForce 4 tech, and has reported a lot of problems.

And if you can choose which E6600 to buy, look for the L627, L628, or later. You can find this code on the retail box's sticker next to FPO/Batch #. L627 and later E6600 gives a better overclocking result compared to earlier batches.
