First off here is the system that I have recently assembled.

Full Tower ATX
300W PWS
ASUS P3V4X (4in1 4.22 GART 4.03)
P3 667 MHz CBo stepping
128 MB Kingston PC133 Value Ram
WD 20.5 GB 7200 RPM HD (Pri. Master)
Iomega internal IDE Zip Drive (Pri. Slave)
Kenwood 62X TrueX CD-ROM (Sec. Master)
HP 9300i CD-RW (Sec. Slave)
Voodoo 3 3500 TV AGP 2X (agp slot)
SB Live! Platinum w/Live Drive 2 (PCI Slot 5)
Linksys 10/100 MB Ethernet Card (PCI Slot 3)
USR internal 56K Winmodem (ISA Slot)
ViewSonic PF795 19" Monitor
Cambridge Soundworks FPS2000 Speakers
Logitech iTouch cordless keyboard and mouse
WIN98 SE

I have the SB live in slot 5 because I heard that was a "sweet spot" for it. Don't know if this is true. The zip drive came out of my old pc, and I am considering removing it. I use my network card for file sharing and what not with my p2 266 linux box. And I use the modem for internet.

Here are the problems I am having. First off, the zip drive will not work properly in Windows. If I boot with a disk in the drive, it will not let me remove it while in windows. If I start with out a disk in the drive, it lets me put one in but then will not let me eject it and put in a new one.

I am getting a fair amount of crackling from the rear speakers. Don't know if this is Sound card or Speakers, but I have them connected using the digital output of the SC. It only happens about every other time the computer is rebooted.

Also every other time I boot my computer the modem does not work. Then next time I boot it works fine.

If my network card is not hooked up to the network, windows takes about 7 minutes to load. when it is connected, it loads quickly. Also when I transfer files to my linux box, it begins the transfer, but after the first couple of files, it quits and says the network is unreachable. (might be a net config problem). Also the network is only available every other time I reboot.

All of my drivers are up to date. If anyone has any ideas on how to solve some of these problems, please help! Thanks in advance!!

The bootup time with Windows can be solved pretty easily. Assign each of the two cards the following IP addresses:

192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 and subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

These are non-routable IP addresses, so Windows will take much less time booting.

I'd be checking the cable orientation on the zip drive and/or the jumper settings on the back. I've found that I don't need any additional drivers from Iomega for my internal zip...just built in Win98SE's. The rest is just extra functionality if you wish with the Iomega software. I'd prefer to run clean, myself.

What kind of error do you get from the modem when it's not working?

Are you using Samba for connectivity between Linux and Win98? You might want to check out this page:

Thx for the posts.

First of all, the winmodem is not new, I just had it from my old system, and seems how I can't use it with linux, which is what my old machine is running now, I threw it into my new machine until I can afford a hardware modem.

Last night I downloaded the newest drivers from the iomega site. Just the drivers, none of the stupid utilities that come with it, and the drive is working fine now. The drivers I was using were from when I first got the drive 3 years ago.

Thanks for the samba link. I have been running linux for about 3 years now off and on, but I have just started playing with samba seems how I only had one computer up till this point. I will take a look at my configuration and see what I can do.

I do have my linux box set up as 192.168.0.2 and I tell it that it's gateway address is the address of my new machine. I have my new machine set at 192.168.0.1 (binding for the ethernet card) and then I have it find an ip automatically through the dial up connection bindings. Is this correct? I also would like to be able to share the dial-up connection with the dial up sharing thing in windows 98SE if anyone has any idea how to set this please let me know.

Sound card problem is fixed. I just upgraded my Live Drive for a Live drive 2. It came with a digital din adapter card, so instead of plugging my digital speakers into the sound card with the adapter, I can plug it into the adapter card and it seems to be clearer.

Thx for the great info.

You go into the Internet Options window and there will be a push button to share and it will have you create a diskette. Then it should work as long as the other systems are set up to use DHCP. Don't use the diskette that it makes. Pretty simple.

I personally hate asus motherboards .
so far I have had 3 of them and all 3 were junk
I just use tekram motherboards and avoid all the memory and configuration problems
