New System Rig

In about couple weeks I plan on building a new rig. All parts will be order on the newegg's web site of course. After thinking this is what I came up with so far. What is your guys input on the system specs? Don't plan on overclocking at all.

A couple of suggestions.

Why not go for an ATI 5870 for about same price ($20 more) but get better performance, lower power consumption, and DX11 + Eyefinity support?

Also why get an older socket motherboard and RAM when the newest ones cost about the same? This AM3 motherboard is pretty good and this DDR3 RAM is not that expensive.

Also I would recommend saving some money and grabbing the Phenom II X4 955 BE instead. They are both BE chips so OC is as easy as bumping up the multiplier.

If you plan to use that 1TB as your system/main drive, I suggest you go for the Caviar Black instead. It's got twice the cache and generally rated to be the fastest/best 1TB drive ever made.

Yes. I think it's sufficient, but you could go higher if you want to be absolutely sure and/or if you can afford to.

I built my first system three years ago and 90% of the parts came from NewEgg.

I just built a new system this week and only one component (2x2GB GSkill DDR3 RAM) came from NewEgg.

My price shopping determined they just were not competitive with ewhiz (superbiz - Athlon II x4 620/MSI 785GM-E65 cpu/mobo combo), zipzoomfly (64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium OEM), and Buy.com (Kingston SSDNow V 40 GB ssd -boot drive).

Bottom line: unless you have a good reason to be loyal to NewEgg, shop around.

Think I made up my mind about it. The above system specs will be the ones I'm ordering end on the month. Only small change I'll be ordering a 2nd HD5870 as well. So I'll be able to run crossfire right away. 🙂

I don't see a aftermarket cooler for the cpu. Healthy temps is healthy. Also, I wouldn't invest in another 5870 right away because unless you plan on running Crysis maxed out on a giant screen, it's overkill. Pick one up later down the line when Fermi releases and hopefully pushes ATI back to MSRP prices, and if you want, use the money now and pick up some rock solid SSDs to get a better overall performance. Or even drop the Phenom and pick up an i5/i7 for the long run. A watercooling kit would also be a great investment, in case you ever decide to pick up the i7/future processors.

EDIT: By the way, do you live in California (or any other state charged tax by newegg)? Avoid that near 10% and buy from Amazon/TigerDirect/Google Shopping.
