New System Problems

Hey everyone,

My friend already has my problem posted a few pages back, but since my computer is the one with the problem and he's busy playing WoW I thought I'd take it over. Anyway my system starts up just fine and the BIOS runs and recognizes my drives, but I get a problem when I try to start reformatting process with the Windows CD. The CD drive starts spinning and the "Setup is inspecting your hardware configuration screen" comes up but then after a second or two it crashes and the screen goes blank.

I've tried swapping out the HDD, CD drive, floppy drive, and the vid card. I've tried swapping out the power supply (450W) that came with the case but the one I switched to was only 250W, so I guess I can't eliminate that. I've also tried booting with each RAM stick by itself and still got the same problem. The strange thing is that Windows setup actually started once only to crash again part way in and crush my spirits. Anyway, here are my specs:

nVidia Geforce FX 5700 Le
Western Digital 80Gb HDD
Samsung CD-RW/DVD Combo (CD drive and my HDD were taken from my old Dell, the rest is new)
450W PSU

Any help you could give would great. Me and my one post are still somewhat new at this.

What brand and model is the 450W power supply? There's a lot of really scummy ones out there.

Also, what model is your Corsair PC3200 (ValueSelect, 3200C2, 3200LL, 3200XL, or what)? And if your Western Digital drive is on an IDE cable by itself, make sure to take the jumper cap off of its jumper pins so it's in Single Drive mode, and not Master or Slave.

The power supply is an ASYS that came with the case. The model is LC-B450E. My RAM is the ValueSelect, sorry for forgetting to mention that.

Taking the jumper off didn't fix the problem so I'm taking my system over to a friend's tonight to try out his power supply. From what I've been reading it sounds like there are a lot of bad power supplies that come with cases so hopefully a better one will fix the problem. I'll let you know how it goes.

Okay, I tried my friend's power supply and I still got the same problem. I've now switched out everything except the motherboard and the cpu. Does this mean that one of the two are bad or is there something else that might be causing the problem?

Is your friend's power supply a known high-quality brand with enough wattage to run your system?

I would try running memtest on your memory, or try installing windows using just 1 stick.

His power supply is an Enermax Noisetaker, pretty sure it's 470W. I tried each RAM stick by itself and I still get the same problem.
