New System Keep XP OS drive

I want to swap out a few 939 systems with C2d but would like to just take the XP OS drives as is. Is that possible to just plug the OS drive into a different processor based system.

I realize I would need to remove the 939 drivers and install the C2D MB drivers.

Yes, it is. Make sure you remove everything remotely resembling drivers. It should definitely be possible, though not quite as clean as a fresh install.

I think it would be better to start with a clean, fresh install. Too many 939 drivers and such.

I agree with boyo....fresh install would be the better option.

You will most likely have to run an XP repair to get it back up and working if you want to keep everything as is....but a clean load would still be better.

Also remember that retail WinXP licenses allow you to do that, but OEM WinXP licenses don't. Hopefully you bought retail 🙂

The people saying "ZOMG TEH DRIVERS WILL NEVER WORK RIGHT" have clearly never done this.

Use a Repair Install and it generally works. Doing this removes all the hardware data and drivers from the registry, which is -- gasp -- what reinstalling will also do. The only problem I had doing it -- twice -- was that my video drivers had to be reinstalled after I'd loaded all the other drivers for some reason or my gaming performance was lousy. After I did that it worked just fine. I will say, in fairness, that a few people here have tried it and been less successful, but overall I feel like the success rate is high.

Worst case, you wipe it and do a full reinstall. You might as well try the Repair Install, unless you only have a few applications installed and don't think it will take you very long to get everything set back up the way you like it.

The "license" doesnt "allow" you to do that..but that doesnt mean it cant be done. 😉
