Damn, too bad I got in on this thread a little late... with the heavily multi-threaded workload you are describing, you are nuts for having gone with an Athlon 64 over a P4 w/HT. The "J"s are very good overclockers as well, most of them hitting 4Ghz+ on air.

Enjoy your rig, though.

My, my, how did we ever get along without you Boz ??? :Q :Q :Q :Q :Q

I am aware that P4's outperform Athlon64's in audio/video encoding, 3d rendering applications and multi-threaded applications.

The OP (Original Poster) had already made up his mind on Athlon64 and I didn't see it as my duty to try to dissuade him.

You say the "J" series Pentiums overclock well "on air". Shi*, the "Prescotts" run so HOT even STOCK that you can heat a house with them (I've heard this even from P4 fans, let alone what you can read on the web). OC'ng them would only making cooling an even MORE problematic issue.

What type of "on air" solution are you talking about for the P4 ??? Are you sure you mean "air" and not "WATER" !!! When one has to use more extreme measures to successfully overclock a P4 when one can OC an Athlon64 using an 80mm or 120MM HSF I think the decision as to which option will be more successful and LESS cumbersome is obvious. ATHLON64 !!!

I think the OP did JUST FINE without your input. :D

You are preaching to the choir, I am posting this from a Newcastle 3400+... and yes, a P4J does mighty well on air despite it's heat output. Hell, read the latest article here on the Asus 955x board. Even if it didn't, the simple truth is a P4 would be better for his workload, you can't flame me for suggesting that - it's the simple truth.

In the future, maybe you should relax and let the OP speak on his own behalf.

ah yes, if there were such a thing as a "simple truth" but the simple truth is that there IS no "simple truth" !!!

I would have let him speak for himself but he was not online in the morning hours when you and I had our "discussion". Furthermore, he has "closed" this thread, in effect, (see the edit he added to the title of the thread), because he has either already purchased or has ordered ALL the parts he needs for his system and he is eager to build it; I doubt he's eager to take "pot shots" from a**holes like you who NOW want to tell him he bought the wrong CPU/mobo.

Gads, there's so many jerks at this website; glad I'm one of the few decent ones !!!

Wow.

First of all, I have NO idea why you think I'm an "asshole" trying to make a "pot shot" at the OP. The point of these threads is for people to make suggestions against what the OP has chosen. Second of all, if you really have a problem with me, take it to PM, don't crap this guy's thread.

1) See, the very word you chose what YOU think is the mission of people at this forum goes against the very nature of it; we are NOT here to go "against" the OP; we are here to SUPPORT the OP... and to either support his/her decisions or offer him/her alternative choices. This can be done in a POLITE manner without making the OP feel foolish or feel like he/she has made the wrong choices. I often offer up altenatives to some of the forum member's hardware options but I don't come in to a post after they have ALREADY purchased their components and tell them ...."You screwed up..." It isn't necessary and it just isn't polite !!!

2) I am not thread-crapping and like I told you before , the OP edited the title of the thread and added "All Done"....

The Asus card you got is a sweet deal. I would jump on it if they had it here for that price.

As for the Geil, I'm getting the value (cheap) ones; your first link. I plan on using a memory divider. Ram performance won't be the best but it should not be a major drawback in the big picture. It's also on the DFI Ultra-D compatibility list.

I'm ordering this morning the rest of the stuff. I've been hunting this system upgrade for a month now...I wan't to get it done.

I here ya about "wanting to get it done" ! It seems like you made some GREAT component choices. The DFI nForce4 boards are known for their great ock'ing capabilities and the 3000+ "Venice" is a great little CPU. I hope the Saphhire card works well for you (you can't go wrong with the radeon x700 PRO).

Did you go with the WD 74GB Raptor as your hard drive choice???

Please let me know via this thread or via the private message feature. You can quickly send someone a private message if you add them to your "Buddies" list. Then all you have to do is double click on their name (in your buddy list to the left of the screen) and a window opens up to send them a PM.

I've enjoyed being a participant of this thread. Oh, and before I forget, thanks for the link to the Zaman northbridge cooler. I will probably void my 2 year warranty (for which I paid $20) where I purchased my mobo/cpu "combo" by using the Zalman. I've heard so many poeple complain about that small, noisy, stock hsf that Asus uses that I think going with the Zalman passive solution is the best way, I hope.

If I would have run into you a few days earlier I could have chosen NOT to get the extended warranty on my "combo" and that would have paid for the Zalaman Northbridge cooler with some spare change. Oh well

Best of luck and please keep in touch,

Greg :D

I thought this thread would have died, but oh surprise when I checked in "My forums". Anyways this a good occasion to post you some feedback.

First, I received all the parts I said I would order. The installation was very smooth. Of course at this stage I'm in deep love with all my new components. I could go on and on about how I like the DFI board, how my Zalman cooler is efficient and quiet and how my Sapphire X700pro is great in Far Cry that I couldn't play before and so on and so forth.

Fisher999, yes I did go with the Raptor and I like it very much. I personnaly think it is worth the extra bucks. I feared it would be noisy so I put rubber gromlets in each screw hole. But really it's not a problem. I can't hear it at idle and there's a slight churning when working with big chunks of data. Windoze loads fast, file extraction also, loading apps,...
And for your heatsink, I'm guessing that if you can remove the original heatsink without breaking the plastic pins, your warranty won't be void as you can put the original heatsink/fan back on if you need to take it back.

Oh and for the record this system overclocks like a charm and I didn't push to the rims yet. Still learning the bios settings. Here are my OC results so far:

-=General Info=-
CPU Model Number: ADA3000DAA4BP
CPU Code: LBBLE 0516DPJW

-=System Info=-
Motherboard: DFI NF4 Ultra-D
BIOS Revision: 310
Memory: 2x512 Geil PC3200
PSU: OCZ Powerstream 420W
Cooling Type, Brand, Model: Air, Zalman 7700cu

-=Stable OC Info=-
Max Stable OC: 2520 mhz
Prime95 SFFTs: 12:10 H:M
Prime95 LFFTs: N/A
HTT and Multiplier Used: 280 * 9
Actual VCore: 1.39V
CPU Temp in BIOS (Idle): haven't cheched
CPU Temp in OS (Idle):34C
CPU Temp Under Load: 46C
+12V Reading (Idle): 11.9V
+12V Reading (Load):11.9V

I'm sure this is just a beginning as I haven't pushed the system yet. I wan't to get more familiar with the bios before attempting more aggressive overclocks. For kicks I did manage to boot in Windows at 9x300 and failed at 9x310.

BTW Boztech, thanks for your advice but like you said it did come in a little late in the game. Still, I think I would have stuck with the AMD choice as I can switch to 64bit OS in the future.

And fisher999 I'm thankfull for your advice in this thread, I got the X700pro instead of the plain vanilla 6600 because of you.

Great ! I'm happy that you like your new system - and WOW, what results you're having with it.... already oc'd the 3000+ 1.8GHz venice to 2.5GHz.... NOT BAD :D

I finally thought of that solution for my CPU if I have to send the system back to Monarch. Plus, even if I do ruin the fan, Asus has had so many complaints about that cheesy fan of theirs that they are sending out replacements. I'm going to order one and just "put it away" (like you said) and then if I have to RMA the CPU/board to Monarch during my warrany period I'll just take the Zalman off and put the ASUS fan back on. ;)

I'm glad I was at least help to you in your videocard decision and I'm real pleased your enjoying your system.
