hey friend... thanks for looking at my post... what's your opinion?

i'm no geek and could use help. i just finished building this system and there's something fishy here! if you solve it then i'll send you either my homebrew or a good recipe!

amd 64 3500+ 2.21 GHz
MSI K8N Neo4 moboard
1 gig Crucial Ballistix Ram (512 x 2)
GeForce 7800 GT
Western Digital SATA WD2500JD
WinXP home

system works great... but when i play games, CoD2 or Quake 4- for example, the game will freeze for a second or two--sometimes three seconds, then continue. It does it not just once, but a couple times. It seems to occur mostly at the start of a session, and then again, perhaps at a new map.

any help appreciated and thank-You in advance

I can think of a few things:

Right click on the Windows desktop screen (blank area), select properties, then goto settings. From here select the advanced button and then the troubleshoot tab. There should be an option for Enable write combining, turn this off (if it's selected). Give it a try, you may or not need to reboot - I'd do it anyway.

Next option could be something in your BIOS, but I'm not familiar with your BIOS so I can't tell you exactly what it is. If you're still still having issues after the above I'll see if I can find it.

There may be a setting in the game for graphics options, again not sure I haven't played those games.

Lastly, there may be some *.ini file tweaks for the game, which again I haven't played those so I'm not sure.

The first is usually a big culprit for this. The BIOS the likely second.

Just looked in my manual.

For the BIOS if you have PCI/VGA snoop enabled you'll probably want that off. I was thinking there was another, but that may be for older MBs, possiblely even AGP systems.

Had another thought which might cause this, and that would be an IRQ resource conflict.

Let's see how the first options look first.

Yes BadThad... you're exactly right. How'd you guess? I am using the onboard sound and the hiccups do occur in single player mode of both CoD2 and Quake4. You gatta tell me more!!??? :)

Have you installed the latest nVidia chipset drivers for nForce4 yet? Also, see if MSI has an updated driver for the integrated SBLive! sound system.
