All cables were connected according to user manual, but PC does not beep or Power-On-Self-Test (POST). The Heatsink CPU fan does not spin. I am totally lost. I can hear the SATA Hard disk drives (HDD) spinning. The IDE CD-ROM does not light up. While the ATX 2x12 Main Power cable is connected, ATX-12V-2X4 is not found on my Power Supply (PSU). PWR_LED never turn on. F_Panel does not turn on. RJ-45 LAN Port LED lights are off. There are no video signals sent to monitor. All PHASE_LED lights on mainboard are on. What can be done to debug this system? Please help.

Components:

  • OS:Windows XP
  • CPU:Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core CPU

  • Memory:Kingston 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066

  • PSU:430 Watts 80 PLUS Power Supply

  • HD:Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.

  • Cooling:Intel Stock HSF Misc:

Alright, so... first things first, you won't hear any beeps unless you have a case speaker plugged into the Mobo.

Next up, is the CPU fan connected to the Mobo? It should go in the CPU_FAN header which is usually about 2-3 inches from the socket, generally near the DIMM slots.

As for your power connector issue, you should have the 24 pin ATX connector going into the mobo, and then another 4 (or maybe 8 these days) pin 12V ATX connector going in as well. You can get by on just a 4pin 12V connector though.

Thank you for reply.

The main question are:

  • Does this mainboard need a higher wattage PSU? Currently Antec EA 430W PSU is being used.

The PSU does not have 2x4 connector. It only has a 4 Pin ATX connector. But it physically fits in the 2x4 connector on the mainboard however. Right now the 4 Pin ATX 12V is not connected to mainboard. Only the 20+4 Pin main power cable is connected.

The CPU_FAN is connector is plugged into the Mainboard. It doe not spin. But the SYS_FAN is connected to PSU connector and does spin.

The speaker wire is connected using a section on mainboard called F_PANEL Header.

Please help. Thank you.

1: Yes, it needs both the 24 pin ATX connector and whatever you have that will go in the 8 pin port on the mobo. All of these connectors should be keyed in such a way as to prevent misplacing them, but you want to make sure that the 4 pin connector that you plug into the mobo is 2 yellow and 2 black wires.

2: The motherboard doesn't need a higher wattage PSU, and i can't see a way that your system would either.

Plug in the 4 pin 12V connector and lets see what happens.

The 4-pin ATX wire was connected to the mainboard and the system did beep and pass POST. But the next problem is Windows XP setup CD generates a Stop error screen below:

A problem has been deteched and windows has been shut down to prevent damage your computer.

This is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver upates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical information:
*** STOP: 0x0000007e (0xC0000005, 0xF748e0bF, 0xF78DA208, 0xF78D9F08)
*** pci.sys - Address F748e0bf base at F7487000, DateStamp 3b7d855c

There is only one PCI card attached to the mainboard which is an old ATI Radeon 9250 256mb video card.
The BIOS recognize the two SATA 2 hard drives and 2 GB RAM inside the case.

My copy of Windows XP is also old, from 2002.

What tests can be done to debug this. Which component(s) are failing? Do you think the problem is with the setup of the SATA 2 HDDs. There are two in the case. The first HDD is for the operating system and applications. The second HDD is for data only: photos, videos, documents, music, etc.

I am totally stuck. Please help. Thank you.

Alright, you probably are going to need to get your hands on a newer XP disk. Any chance at all that you are near central pa?

Yea, not so close then. You definitely either need to get your hands on a newer disk, or create your own using nLite. Just find the Service Pack 3 installer (it is somewhere on Microsoft's website) and then install nLite. It is pretty easy to do really, but will require the use of another computer. Conversely, you should be able to contact Microsoft and order a new disk, I think it runs about $10 (shipping costs mostly). This disk will not come with a key, so you are not getting a new license, just a new key.

Thank you for reply.

Let me summarize, you are suggestion using a newer copy of Windows XP setup.
nLite can make a new Windows XP setup CD with SP3 included.

Is that right? An extra PC to download SP3 and use nLite is available for this operation.
But my original copy of Windows XP dated 2002, how will Windows get SATA2 drivers to use during the install?

The Gigabyte mainboard uses Intel S-ATA Controller ICH10R.
Are special SATA2 drivers necessary?
Does SP3 include SATA2 drivers?
I am not trying to make a RAID.

Please help. Thank you.

Alright, you need the other computer because the one in question is currently out of commission. First make sure the other computer has a CD Burner, and software that can burn an ISO to a disk. If nothing else you can a free burning program off the web... try CDBurnerXP.

1: Get nLite from their website (http://www.nliteos.com/download.html)
2: Download XP Service Pack 3 from here (http://download.windowsupdate....cd4c03e2300ebfde4.exe)
3: Insert your XP into the other computer, and copy the files to a folder on the desktop (let's call it, "XP Copy")
4: Open up nLite and the first thing it will want is for you to point it to that folder. Do so.
5: Move on past the next screen, it should be the one asking you to do something with sessions I believe.
6: This is where you choose what goes into your disk, click the box for Service Packs and the box for Bootable Image.
7: This next screen is going to ask you to point it to the Service Pack installer, do so.
8: Once it does its stuff with the Service Pack, it will tell you that it is done with it, and I believe will move you to the next screen.
9: Here, you mostly leave the stuff alone. I think you can burn the disk from here if you want actually, I always prefer to save the ISO in case I need it again.

Service Pack 3 should have native SATA support in there. Another thing you can try is to go into the BIOS and put your SATA controller into IDE mode. That will trick XP into thinking that they are IDE drives and it will go on its merry installing way.

Thank you for reply.

New XP setup CD-ROM was made with nLite and SP3.

As far as BIOS. there are two options in a section called "Integrated Peripherals" that pertain to SATA:

SATA RAID/AHCI Mode and SATA Port0-3 Native Mode.

Both are disabled.

Setup was able to see both SATA2 HDD and format the first one for installation.
Unfortunately, the Volume License Key that I have is not valid. The company
shut down and all the employees were laid off. So at this point, I have to get a
valid license key to continue the installation or use another copy of Windows.

Thank you.

You should be able to leave that blank and it will continue installing... at least it works that way in Vista.

See if you can't get a new license key for cheap off of someone, or just install the Windows 7 RC and use that for a while. System you are building will fly in 7.

Thank you for the PC Radio Show. It is great.

My copy of Windows XP will not light up a "next" button in the dialogue box
without valid license key.

Any clues about Windows 7 RC?
Unfortunately, the promotion is already over.

Thank you.

Damn, I forgot that the promotion was over... do you have any tech/nerd friends that may have downloaded it?
