I have been slowly putting together my ASUS A8V/3500+ combo this week. One night was the heatsink, one night mounting the board and drives, etc. Last night was the power-on night. Now, I know we've all been there and all had a little extra heartbeat when the new system fires up for the first time.
Well, I dragged my wife in there to mark the historic occasion. I set her up that frequently (my) systems don't always work without a little fine tuning. With little fanfare I hit the power switch - nothing. Ah, power switch was backward. No problem. Switch on, and FANS SPINNING, oh joy!
But wait, no beep, and the monitor is not coming on. Hmm. I power down, start removing the sound card, drives. Still no POST. Basically there is power to the MB and the fans are spinning but no POST.
Ok, be calm, I say. Wife is now asleep on the couch. Check Anand forums...right, unmount the mobo outside the case. Heatsink, memory, video card, power. And .. same. Fans spinning but no display and no POST.
At this point I am resigning myself to a painful RMA from a company I have never heard of (nice deal on the combo) in Michigan. I was so proud of my Thermalright installation, I even used a qtip to get rid of any edge of goo after mounting. With a sigh I unmount the MB and heatsink/fan. Just for the heck of it I unsocketed the CPU and for the heck of it turned it over...
OMFG MY NEW 3500+ 939 PROC HAS A BENT PIN!!!!
As I stared in agony, wondering how I could explain to my wife that a $400 proc was RUINED by me, I could already hear the converstion ("why didn't we just buy a Dell, etc, etc. They dont GET IT.)
Well, I thought I might as well TRY and bend that single pin back. I had visions of it breaking off, but I figured I was going to have to eat it anyway. Low and behold, using a $50 paring knife I was successful! Moment of truth...remount (VERY carefully this time)...unmount just to make sure.....remount...heatsink...power etc....and... POST THANK YOU GOD AND DISPLAY WORKING!!!!!
Thought you might like the story....sorry if wrong category but I figured you guys could use a laugh and a war story, maybe learn something from me and know that a bent pin isn't the end of the world.
