New System Built

I recently built a new system using the TH7-2 (non-raid) mobo.
P4 1.5
512MB Rambus 800 Samsung
IBM 40Gig Deskstar 7200
Pioneer DVD
SB Live Value
NVidia GeForce2 Ultra
3Com NIC 10/100
Generic Floppy
Enermax Power Supply 350W

I can boot the system into the bois, but it will not detect the hard drive. I have tried three ide cables and three hard drives. Two of the three cables and hard drives where out of working PCs. The thing that seems strange to me is that non of the hard drives will even spin up on boot. I have not changed any settings (default). I have tried using both channels and disconnecting the CD and Floppy to eliminate any conflicts.

Is there any suggestions for me? On my own I am to the point of starting to return parts one at a time until I find the problem. Starting with the mobo.

Thank You in advance.

Will bios detect the cdrom? if not I think you may have a dead ide controler and need a replacement board ..

Edit: btw all drives will spinup once power is supplied to them. It still does'nt rule out drive failure or a bad controller

Should have added that. Yes I can see and boot from CD. I have moved the drive to the secondary ide channel and also put the CD on the primary channel. The CD works on both channels but the drive will not work on either. Also tried putting the drive on the same channel with the CD.

The confusing part to me is, when I put a known working drive in the system it will not even spin up. It should at least do that, right? In my excitment I feel like I may be overlooking something.

CD works on both channels. New drive will not spin up, on either channel. Working drive will not spin up on either channel.

Your drives aint getting power if they won't spin up. try another power connector. The one which made your cd rom fire up will work. Again the ide cable does not fire these drives up it's getting power which does so. Now I'm thinking a bad power supply.

I'm with Carbonyl, a HD will at do a spin up and initialization when powered up. If you don't hear anything, check the power connection - try another connector.

Have you tried the HDs in another computer to see if they spinup.. (re-read the post and you tried this already)

see following article about Deskstar 75GXPs www.pcworld.com

Unfortunately I have had bad luck with Deskstars lately and have had to return 2 out of 20, I also bought 4 IBM 18GB Ultrastars and had to return one of the four.

🙁 what happened to quality control
