The two blue screen stop codes in the topic summary are what I'm getting:

0x0000000E
0x00000008

They come when installing Windows XP Home or Windows 98 SE on an empty, formatted drive. It happens on XP right near the beginning, before files are copied, while in 98 it happens at the end, when it's "updating system settings." An interesting thing: when I swap video cards (between an FX5900 and a TI4600 -- both MSI), it will give the BSOD at different times, the FX5900 always sooner. It has an MSI K7N2 Delta-L motherboard with up-to-date BIOS. I've tried the 512ddr stick (PC 3200) I bought with the system (ordered parts myself), and a 512ddr stick (PC 2700) I have, that I know works, and no dice.

I tried swapping the memory, and the video card. The only other things connected are the hard drive, cd-rom, and a floppy drive. I'm completely stumped.

If it happens every time, consistently, with both Win9x and WinXP, then I suspect damaged hardware. In this case, prime suspect is the motherboard. The bug check codes for both 0x0E and 0x08 are both "This error occurs infrequently", meaning probably that they're hardware-related errors (possibly single-bit errors?).

However, I would run the HDD manufacturer diagnostics first. If you have a PCI video card available, you might try that, too. I'd say try to find a non-nVidia card, but the mobo is nForce, so if there's some problem there, then there's definately something wrong.

Well, I got a different XP cd, this time full. I reverted the BIOS settings back to the failsafe, and installed XP all the way, succesfully. When I started up, things were a bit unstable. I brought the CPU FSB from 200 down to 133, and it became pretty stable (with a blue screen once). This also brought the cpu speed from 2.2ghz to 1.46ghz.. which isn't exactly to my liking. With this new information, what should I do?

If I can't find an answer here, I'd imagine I'll find myself calling MSI and talking to them (or the distributor), seeing if they know anything about this and what part I should get replaced.
