hello i'm building a new basic raw system and i was thinking of this:

mobo : Albatron KM18G Pro DCh400/Video+TV+AGP8x/5.1/lan
cpu : AMD Athlon XP 2600PR 512K Barton Box
hd : Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 120 Gb ATA133
ram : Geil Value 512 Mb CL2.5-3-3-6 c/disipador
tower: Vitsuba C 450W Negro 3fan 4e 5¼/2e-4i 3½ USB
total U$s 584

or extra U$s 78 to jump to an A64 system, although i would need a video card here:

mobo : Albatron K8X800/FSB800/DDR400/SATA/5.1/Lan
cpu : AMD Athlon64 2800+ 512K NewCastle Box
hd : Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 80 Gb ATA133
ram : Geil Value 512 Mb CL2.5-3-3-6 c/disipador
tower: Vitsuba C 450W Negro 3fan 4e 5¼/2e-4i 3½ USB

total U$s 662

So to sum it up, i can choose between athlon xp with nforce2 mobo or A64 with VIA based mobo. What do you think is better and more reliable?

Is there a really noticeable difference between the two options? i'm using it for 3d applications, animation, photoshop.

Thanks in advance

Both are reliable, I'd get the 64, though. 3d Animations and Photoshop... would you be gaming any? I'd say a 9800Pro would be perfect for just the Photoshop business, otherwise any card in the GeForce 6800 series if you're going to be gaming seriously. The 9800Pro should be just fine for most games, just won't run the new hot titles on max everything.

Not too familiar with the Albatron motherboards, read some reviews and check up on that one. I'd say ASUS and MSI are your best bets...

As for the Vitsuba tower and power supply, I've never heard of it... generic PSU's are notorious for being bad... and the cooling in that tower might be less than adequate, or quiet. Check up on them. I've always been partial to Antec and Thermaltake for cases and PSU's.

Hope this helps,

Ian

thanks a lot

i'll try to make it for the A64 but if i can't find good mobo with onboard video for that then i'll have to go for option 1, yet another cheap system, :( because i need to buy it this week, not possible to wait.

IanE: no gaming on this tower, i'll check on those components.

ScrapSilicon :
Actually, the km board is nf2 , i'ts fsb333 with video, so it's not that bad. but i'd really like to jump to the A64.

If it's down to SocketA/NForce vs A64/VIA, A64/VIA wins. Don't let Anti-VIA feelings get in the way of making a wise decision. So far I haven't heard anything bad about the A64 VIA mobos, the oncpu mem controller removes most of the disadvantages that VIA chipsets traditionally had.
