Hi,

I just put together a new Shuttle AK31A with a XP1600+ and I am having a problem. The system boots fine, and runs for up to an hour, but will abruptly shut down. Does anyone know if this could be caused by my generic 300W power supply. I have seen numerous warnings and will likeley replace it either way, but I haven't seen any description of how the system fails with a bad supply. Thanks for your help.

Sounds like a power problem to me. You could always try mbm to see what that 3v and 5v rail is at =)

Thanks,
I noticed that the CPU heatsink is so large that it presses on one of the springs for the chipset heat sink/fan. I will try to re grease the heatsink also. What is mbm?

Check your voltages. It could well be a faulty or inadequate power supply, but, more likely (unfortunately) is that you have one of the AK31A's afflicted with severe voltage regulation issues. I've seen these problems on several AK31A's now with a wide variety of power supplies. In fact, Shuttle has acknowledged the issue but has not (as of yet) released a fix or offered to replace any boards.

That's a bummer. Can you refer me to information on this problem?

Also, does any one know how large of a voltage fluctuation on my power supply constitutes a problem?
