Got my new system from ABS yesterday (had to order complete system - from work) and I've been testing it's limits. The config is
A8N-SLI Deluxe
FX55
2 x 6800GT
2 x 512MB Corsair PC3200XL
Lian-Li VC1000
Yesterday i tried to OC to 2.8GHz by bumping up the FSB from 100 to 107 (214?). Seemed to work, but Prime95 crashed after a couple hours so I bumped back down to stock speeds and Prime ran all night and day. Tonight I bumped it back up to 2.8 by bumping up the multiplier from 13 to 14. Seems stable, ran Prime95 for a half hour or so, but I will run it all night again to make sure before trying further.
Here comes the question. The CPU idles at 35 and gets to 54 when running Prime95, never higher. I thought this was odd so I downloaded CPU Burn-in, but I get the same results of 54C at full load for 10 mins. Is this normal for an FX55, overclocked to 2.8, default voltage, using what I assume are the stock heatsink and fan? If these temps are as low as I think they are, how high can I get this CPU? Is it worth getting a better heatsink and fan to see if I can really crank it up? How high can I crank this and still be safe with regards to temp? 65C, 70C, higher?
Not too long ago I tested some servers at work running dual 2.66 Xeons, and CPU Burn-in would send those suckers through the roof! (I think ~75C, maybe higher) Those are dual 1U systems, and I'm running a single CPU in a case with lots of ventilation, but still! If the Opterons run this cool, they should make excellent CPU's for dual 1U systems.
