New sys, PCI-e, 6600 GT or 6800 vanilla?

Hey all,

I'm putting together a brand new system, It's going to be a 3200 AMD 64, SLI mobo, 1 gig ram, yadda yadda...

My only problem lies in which video card to get?

I would really like a 6800 GT pci-e card but since I live in Canada and they are impossible to find, I have to opt for the 6600 GT pci-e or the 6800 vanilla pci-e.

The 6600 GT's are 128 meg and the 6800 vanilla's are 256 meg.

I have looked at benchmarks on anandtech and read many forum posts but I am still really confused. There's people saying you can unlock the 6800 vanilla to have 16 pipes, ppl saying the 6600 GT memory is DD3 while the 6800 is not? What's the real deal here?

In canada the 6800 pci-e vanilla from msi is around 500 bucks while the XFX 6600 GT pci-e is around 300

Is the 200 bucks extra for a 256 meg card and 12 pipes worth it? Do all the cards unlock into 16 pipes? What performance advantage does a 16 pipe unlocked 6800 have?

I know the 6600 GT's sli performance, and it does not even beat a single 6800 GT, but what about dual 6800 vanilla's in SLI? I can't seem to find any benchmarks on that.

Currently I am planning to get a single card in my SLI mobo with the addition of another once prices fall a bit. I doubt I would be getting a dual 6600 GT setup if I go with the 6600 GT because the performance is not all that great (with a 6600 GT I would probably wait for a next gen card to come out), but maybe a 6800 vanilla SLI setup would be worth it?

Games that I play are half life 2 (which does not seem to have any performance differences between 6600 GT and 6800), World of Warcraft (play it the most - addicted), and Doom 3 + new games in the future like stalker.

Please help me, lol, I really need a new system, and this is the only thing stopping me !

Thanks.

I cant find any 6800 256 reviews that are not the ASUS V9999 thing, which is madly overclocked. Ive found an Asus GeForce EN6800TD PCI Express 256Mb, and I think 2 of these SLIed will be faster than 2 6600GTs. But id like confirmation.

D'oh- didn't read original post close enough.

Anyway, this is a tough call. I don't know of any 6800 SLI benches, and that is a big price difference.

Note to self: Never move to Canada, prices way out of line. 😉

Yes the prices are ridiculous. The only pci-e cards I found were at an e-bay store over here

I went to newegg also but they don't ship to Canada and if they did, that 335 $ card would probably end up being 500 or more with the addition of customs tax.

So I'm still stuck 🙁 Why can't they just have 6800 GT pci-e's avail !!! 😡
