Yes - "Because it never stops feeling fun."

http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/15/new-super-mario-bros-u-review/

This deserved a separate post though -

I wonder who got paid off at IGN for that 9.1 review. That's uncharacteristically high for a Nintendo based game at IGN (they really hate the kiddy image I believe).

Now they gave a Nintendo game the highest of all reviews it's gotten from other independent reviewing sources? Something smells fishy.

Summary: It's another 2D Mario game.

This is all I needed to know to be highly unimpressed. I've played it before. Oh now there's a new set of blocks there instead of here? Or the platform swings differently and you can play with 4 people?

I'm over 2D mario...I have no hatred of the old ones that were very innovative but after all these years and new hardware this is all they can do for a launch title?

Wow, that's deep.

As opposed to another 3D Halo....GTA....Mass Effect...CoD...Battlefield...?

Mario has no story to begin with. You really trying to compare Mario to Grand Theft Auto? How about the Halo universe complete with all the back story and mythology associated with it?

Face it... 2D mario is old and doesn't cut it anymore for a lot of people. It's like Nintendo isn't even trying with the series anymore and only trying to appeal to people who love nostalgia more than innovation. That and casual gamers.

A snippet from an article I read on gamesradar really sums it up for me. Talking about forcing Multiplayer to be the crux of the game because the single player is nothing special over previous titles.

that means tinkering with one of core gaming's most-treasured staples, it does fly in the face of everything the core gamers have thought they've been due for the past 12 months. Especially when Iwata himself has been assuring everyone the new machine will definitely cater for the core market that felt so abandoned last time round.

Normally we'd just point to New Super Mario Bros Wii which was similarly geared towards multiplayer at the expense of gratifying solo play and say 'well, it's just the social Mario game'. And we'd rub our hands together in gleeful anticipation of the 'real' Mario game. But for Wii U – so far – there isn't one.

That probably says more about Nintendo's still-misjudged guess at what people wanted to see from the Wii U at E3. As a festival of coin-collecting and squirrel-suiting for all the family, this Mario really works. But the long-term Nintendo fans may well yearn for something more grand that feels like it's just for them. It's inevitable that a big new Mario game is coming, but official confirmation would go a long way to soothing our anxiety.

Psh, please. You're just ignorant.

There's plenty of story in Mario if you know where to look.

Are you trying to troll or what? First you say IGN inflated the score and it's a solid game but not excellent or amazing. Now you try to defend the game when you see people saying that 2D mario is stale. What are you saying?

It's ignorant to blatantly ignore a huge section of the market that is screaming for something new from this series.

It looks like it'll be better than the DS games, and probably better than the Wii one. But you know what really pisses me off? They used the same god damn music again. Four games in a row. What the fuck. Is Koji Kondo that busy that they have to reuse his song from 2006 for the fourth time even though it was never that good in the first place? It's a stunning display of laziness and a lack of creativity, and reeks cash grab. So even if it's the best one of the four yet... for shame Nintendo. That song needs to fucking die.

Graphically, the Starry Night (Van Gogh) levels rival Yoshi's Island in beauty and are worthy of praise. But everything else is "meh" and barely updated over the DS and Wii games. With Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends leading the way in 2D art, it's embarrassing to see Mario get the lazy treatment.

Hopefully it is still a great game besides the dishonorable reuse of music and mostly lazy graphics. But it's the extra step that they didn't take that irks me.

Play Rayman Origins if you haven't, people. Please. They even have it on Steam and PS Vita. It's everywhere. It's the best 2D platformer in 15 years and is overflowing with creativity both visually and musically as well as genius gameplay design. When you're done, play Donkey Kong Country Returns for the Wii if you have one. Only then should you give the new Mario games a spin.

I've owned and completed Rayman and DKC Returns. Both great.

I'm not saying that NSMBWU is garbage but it is quite stale. Heck I'm not much of a 2d platform gaming fan anymore anyhow. From what I'm hearing from people I talk to locally and on forums, I am not the only one who feels this way.

They should be looking at Mario 64 for guidelines on a modern system, not NES games. Thats the only game that has successfully brought Mario to the 3D 6DOF era.

PS my retro "nostalgia" only applies to RPGs where the stories are timeless and and engrossing independant of gameplay or technology. 2D Mario on the other hand has nothing going for it any more than Pac Man.

I found the new mario on Wii better than Rayman Origins. The visuals and sound of Rayman were incredible and surely among the most appealing in a game of its type in years. The problem is that the gameplay and level design are a bit too restrictive. It feels like half of the levels are on rails to me.

The new mario is among the best cooperative games I've played. Alongside Halo, another game with yet another sequel out now.

Mario wasn't on rails? Oh geeze...it's the same formula as any 2D platformer. Going down a pipe does not count for much because there are also secret warp areas in rayman.

Not anywhere near as much as rayman origins was on rails.

I'll most likely get a Wii U just so that the wife and I can play this together. We really liked Mario for the Wii, and the trailer for this game looks pretty good.

Was hoping new Wii would be called Wii 2 but in Japanese so it could be pronounced "weenee"

got a chance to see the Wii U in action at Walmart today. some little kid was playing the new Mario game and it was amazing. 2D at its finest. graphics were clean and it looked like a lot of fun. definitely going to be getting this.

I loved Mario as a kid. When I see a vid of it now in one of those reviews it just looks like history left it behind. I understand reviews for it are good, but personally I doubt I would even play it for free for mostly the same reasons mentioned above

Are you trying to troll or what?

No more than you are.

It's pretty obvious you -

A. Don't care for the game and nothing can change your mind (So why bother? I'd rather post up a comic.)

or

B. Are just trolling yourself. (In which case you like Mario...so hopefully the comic gave you a chuckle.)

Either way, I don't go into GTA5 or Halo threads will the sole reason to express my disappointment or to shittalk/threadcrap.

So why are you here?

I've been around since Donkey Kong on arcade with Mario in it, and then my NES came with Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt, I've played Mario games here and there over the years and honestly I just have never, ever been able to get into them... I don't really like platformers I think. It's also the motif, I don't like the happy shiny Mario thing.

The only Mario games I've ever enjoyed are Mario Kart, and that's mostly just playing with family who can't game.

But hey, for those of you who dig the series, more power to you. To each his own. Sounds like this new one is a good entry in the series, by Mario/platformer standards.

Because I am having a discussion about the state of Mario franchise which I started playing in 1985. My argument is it's stale, too old, and overuses certain things. What's your argument?
