A winner at both the box office and the Academy Awards (it nabbed a Best Makeup statue, the first Oscar nod for a Trek film), the 2009 Star Trek movie reboot breathed new life into the 45 year-old sci-fi series. Paramount Digital is hoping a video game reboot will enjoy similar success.

On Friday, the company announced Star Trek, a co-operative action game for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Due out next year, the game puts players in the well-worn uniforms of Kirk and Spock as they try to stop some evil alien race from blowing up the universe, or thereabouts. The details are pretty lacking at the moment.

But don't fret, Trekkers: it's in good hands. The game's original plot -- which "continues the adventure" depicted in the film -- was penned by God of War scribe Marianne Krawczyk alongside Star Trek writer/producers Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman. Gamers can sleep tight as well, as proven game maker Digital Extremes (BioShock 2, The Darkness II) is handling development duties in collaboration with JJ Abrams' production company, Bad Robot, and producer Damon Lindelof.

It's been a while since gamers boldly went anywhere cool in the Star Trek universe. The most recent big release, 2010's Star Trek Online, met with mixed reviews and failed to catch on. Star Trek D-A-C, a 2009 downloadable game, fared no better. Here's hoping the new game beams down a little more fun.

Playing as Spock/Kirk? Could be coop....

I'm sorry, but I can't help but look forward to this.

Wonder if it will have single player or co-op on the same machine?

It is really expensive to have to have two copies of the game and two gaming PCs to play co-op with someone in your immediate family. Sounds like the game has possibilities. Could be really lame or really fun like Mass Effect or KOTOR before they turned it into an MMO.

the only ST game that I enjoyed was a TNG game made for SNES. You fly around from planet to zone or whatever, choose a landing party and explore, using the various abilities of your chosen teammates.

It was basically a proto Mass Effect, with a Syndicate sort of feel to it. It was quite fun.

Unless Kirk gets a ton of action with green skinned aliens and there are tribbles in the game it will be a failure.

If this game is to be based upon the 'new' Star Trek then it deserves to burn in the depths Epsilon Persei 8

I started playing on the NES, and I'm honestly trying to remember a single Star Trek game I have enjoyed (not saying I played every single ST games ever created on this planet to this day, but I've played a good bunch on multiple platforms over the years), and I can't. Well, not true... I think I enjoyed Elite Force II, but that's about it. I'll be surprised if anything "fun" comes out of a Star Trek game even with today's techs and standards of gaming, and I'm not sure why, the universe itself is rich and varied, it just seems that video gaming and ST just don't go together.

While the fact it's going on the new altered timeline, classic characters (recently reborn so to speak), and all that is cool. I have faith in the story, too, based on what they said.

The problem I have... I'm tired of playing as an established character. I would love to start a whole new character, my own starship, but play in that universe. I want to start off as a student in Star Fleet, then become an ensign in my choice of study on a star ship, move up the ranks, and become captain (games first half). Then the 2nd half of the game I get to be instrumental in saving the universe at the sides of these characters (maybe my ship becomes damaged by X enemy, and the Enterprise picks me up, and I work with them to solve it).

Something where my own designed character is the key player, but in that universe we've recently re-established.

... i'll still play it though, because I'm a consumer whore.

I haven't given up hope for a decent Star Trek game.

If you recall, 2009 and before, gamers were constantly complaining about the fact that there wasn't a decent Batman game out there.

Well, there finally was one, and the sequel looks to be just as fun as the original.

For a good Star Trek game you need Sins of a Solar Empire and the Sacrifice of Angels mod. That being said I loved Bridge Commander and the old Starfleet Academy game. The Klingon Academy game was great too.

Every few years there's a new Star Trek game and every few years it's hyped for a bit then dissipates to nothing :|

Until the next post, that is :p

Starfleet command II was among the best of star trek video games...

would like to see something like it, but with full on campaignes instead of the dynaverse.
