New SSD, w7 hangs and disk activity maxes out

I just got a new intel 320 120gb SSD. I did a fresh windows7 install with bios set to AHCI mode. Intermittently, programs display the Not Responding message. I can still move windows around but the programs won't respond for abuot 30 seconds at a time very intermittently. I noticed when this is happening, if i look at the resource monitor, the disk activity graph is maxed out at 100mb/sec and stays there for the entire hang event. Once programs return to normal, the activity drops down to normal.

I am currently using the intel toolbox to do a full diagnostic scan. It has the latest firmware. Superfetch is disabled/optimized. Any ideas on what i should look at?

did you use the windows 7 installer to make your partitions or did you install onto partitions which were already there / made using another program?

Please post your system specs also.

I used the windows installer. During the install i clicked Format through the windows installer and it installed from there.

Specs are;
Asus p5q-e
Core2Duo e7300
4gb RAM
6950HD Video
Intel 320 120gb HD
Windows7 64bit Pro

I have 2 other HDD drives but they are not currently connected. I was having some odd problems getting the SSD to work when the other 2 drives were connected. The system has run fine for over a year before the addition of the SSD and if i disconnect the SSD and boot off my previous HDD configuration everything is fine.

Ok now i am noticing something. When i first boot into windows everything is fine. But as soon as I start do to something that is heavy on the HD, it starts to do the intermittent hanging. Windows update is one thing that will induce it, but if i try to download a game through Steam it will do the same thing. When it happens the bar graph for the ssd in resource monitor maxes out and returns to normal when the hang goes away. Very annoying.

Any ideas?

I swapped the SSD cable, moved it to a different sata port, and removed the dvdrom drive and it is now working normally!

There was a lot of errors in the event log "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort2" and the SSD smart data showed a lot of C7 errors, 4500+.

Not sure if it was the cable itself or the port, will do some more testing later.

Wasn't the cable either. I put the "bad" cable back in and it was fine but i stopped using the port it was plugged in. Added back the other two HDD and the dvd drive and everything is working. Probably a bad port on the motherboard or some kind of weird glitch with the way i had the drives hooked in in a particular order.
