new SSD Samsung 840 EVO makes a high pitched sound that varies

is this going to go away or do I need to RMA it?
It's strong enough to be annoying.

It also does it while whining but it gets stronger and varies when under load.

Would changing the position in the case help with this?

SSD's have no moving parts. So, why it's making a noise is beyond me. If the noise is truly coming from the SSD I would RMA that sucker fast. My 840 EVO makes no noise. Never has.

coils can do noise and I'm not the only one with this issue apparently.
That's unfortunate since I already formatted and installed everything :X

Thats throttles can sing . Does sound synchronized with writing/reading something?

yeah if I leave it idle there is a constant noise but when it works I can hear variations.
Also when I'm changing settings in samsung magician (like disabling RAPID) the noise stops.

EDIT: sometimes it's also silent

My system has a noise like this as well... I only noticed after switching to an SSD. I haven't figured out what it is, but just wanted to add that it might also be the PSU (?). Here is my post on it: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2354774

I will say that I haven't noticed the noise recently... and I did recently replace my computer speakers... but I will see if I can check it tonight since I saw this post!

No worries, if this "songs" doesn't disturb you much, drive will live same long as usual. Or you can RMA it, thats the reason, of course. Later, noices will decrease.

it's a bit too annoying for me, I can feel my left ear as different from the right ear due to the noise.
I'm not sure if I want to sit on this as I have time to change it now, later not so much.

I found a way to play it: I have RSS feeds in the firefox toolbar that open like menus, once I open one, by moving the mouse left or right I can open the other ones.
When I switch from one to the other, the whistle stops for an instant and then resumes.

I think this proves it's the SSD as the PSU shouldn't be influenced by such a small change in power consumption, while the browsers accesses a cache to load up the big lists of news titles and links before it can display the list.
 
I have an EVO too and it "sang" when loading games, for the first week or something. I don't know that it was the SSD for sure, but reading this I'm positive it was. It was varely noticeable and didn't bother me because it was for a few seconds only, and had a kind of techy transformers assembling sound that was kind of cool.

Now it doesn't "sing" anymore, and performance is the same.

I wouldn't worry about it, but don't forget to set up a backup for your data. You DON'T want to loose important data in case your hard drive dies on you.

I have done a full image of the disk already because I'm thinking about exchanging it.
If they want to send it back to the factory and not exchange it right there I might keep it though.
 
UPDATE: RMAed it and got a new one, I still hear whistling. It must be the PSU that doesn't like two hard drives.

Now I feel bad for the vendor.

It's the motherboard that's doing the noise.

Awesome band! I listened to them in high school years ago.

as a side note. No SSD should make noise even if they have parts inside that can vibrate/oscillate to make noise. That vibration can cause pre-mature failure.

I'm not an expert but I have had 8 SSD's since they were first introduced on the market. None made noise.
