Apparently 44 world records have fallen in 4 months since the suit's introduction.

Shouldn't the Olympics just buy everyone from every country the suit or something?

Wow, it does indeed seem like that suit contributes quite a bit to the performance of the athlete. I don't know what should be done, but I don't see it as being part of the spirit of the games.

No. If it is a competitive advantage than the owners of said suits should have it and actually guard the technology. It is up to the respective teams to make the most of anything they can.

You wouldn't demand every cyclist use the same bicycle? Every runner to wear the same shoe?

This is no different then spiked track shoes or aerodynamic bicycle helmets.

I think it should be banned. It seems like it's significantly better than any other swinsuit out there. I feel like with bicycles there's more parity. I'm not an expert on these matters - just my hunch.

One could get rid of suits altogether and let the swimmers work vs nature only.

But that would be indecent.

We're supposed to stop all technology? Let's go back to wearing full-size wool swimsuits.

Of course not, but can the other countries easily obtain these suits? Or are they only allowed to those sponsored by Speedo (article seems to insinuate the latter)? Again, I'm not an expert but in the spirit of fair competition --blah blah blah.

Competition is about winning and using every advantage be it through training, coaching, equipment what have you. If one team has that advantage then I think it completely UNFAIR to demand it be available to everybody. Don't have access to these suits? Fine, then make a better one.

I'm surprised this is the first post about the suits because it's all the media have been talking about for months when interviewing competitors.

maybe we could just all close our eyes.

back to topic: i see that suit packs the rudder in tight so it doesn't upset the current as much.

no but the playing field should be lvl. if the suits are that much of an advantage, everyone should be given one or no one shoudl be able to use them

the olympics have always been about personal/team acomplishments, not who can spend the most on the newest tech

So I suppose you support steroid use among the athletes as well then?

Of course not because that is against the rules. The suits are not.

all sports should be in the nude to eliminate any technology component.

Which should be the argument and probably the point of this whole thread. Various sports have measures to check on what equipment you can use. Swimming shouldn't be any different IMO.

I agree, except for sports involving male competitors.

Competition worries you?:p

Wouldn't that actually be working against the swimmer if you let everything hang out? har har.

obviously the suit helps. Should it be banned? No.
There's a huge amount of difference in bicycles, bows and arrows, track shoes... the list goes on and on. Should we be banning all those too? Should we make sure every cyclists rides an IDENTICAL bike? Every runner wears the EXACT same shoe?

How is this just hitting ATOT now too? This is horribly old news.

Forget newest tech, how about spending on training/coaching? Do you think the US should be forced to help fully fund the athletes of the other countries in the world too, so they can afford to train full time year-round with a team of coaches/nutritionists/sports therapists/etc? There are plenty of countries out there with great talent that has to train after work in substandard facilities without Nike equipment and gatorade... That's an even bigger advantage than the suit.
