Hey guys, it's my birthday today and I received some money to buy some speakers for my laptop. I have around 50-75$ and was wondering if anyone could recommend some good quality speakers for music/movies/gaming.

Thanks!

By getting passive speakers like those, you'd need to get an amplifier / receiver as well.

There are small amplifiers you could use (I'm using one with my Office System... pictured under the monitors there).

You could get something like that for ~$40-ish or a used receiver from craigslist for possibly very cheap.

It will be tough to get a couple decent speakers and power for them on that total budget though.

Something a little more straightforward and maybe better results would be to get some studio monitors. There are some available for under $100, but I don't know enough about them to give a particular recommendation.

The other option is just a pair of computer speakers. What's your primary concern here? Loudness? Sound quality? Size limitations? Bass?

My primary concern is sound quality. Size and loudness don't really matter too much.

Are headphones a reasonable alternative? In your price range you can buy a heck of lot better quality headphones than speakers.

Probably irrelevant suggestion:

Do you have a nice pair of headphones? It's pretty easy to get a pair of headphones that sound really good in that pricerange. It's certainly a different functionality than speakers though.

No I don't have a good pair of headphones actually, mine broke a while ago. I guess headphones would be a more reasonable alternative given my budget. So what headphones would you guys recommend?

Btw, I would use the headphones for music, movies, gaming, and listening to my ipod.
