CNBC has a documentary called Crackberry'd which shows how people think they multi-task much better than they actually do.

There is one example where there are groups of people in white clothing and groups of people in black clothing throwing two balls to teammates.

You are asked to count total number of times ball is transferred between players in white clothes.

Answer is 13, but they point out did you notice the witch dressed in black that walked through whole scene from right to left and even completely spun around in middle of screen (I didn't).

Another test they did was have a clown on unicycle ride around campus and asked a lot of people who were texting whether they even noticed the clown (answer was often no).

IIRC, music is much less distracting than texting and at highway speeds you may be able to travel 4 footballs fields while being transiently distracted by texting.

Tru dat. Ever been in a car where the driver is telling a story? Holy shit. Inconsistent speed, miss turns, everything is bad.

This is a pretty stupid, pointless thing to do.

This won't prevent lawsuits b/c any injury sustained would be subject to work comp and the aggrieved party would be barred from suit.

This won't prevent work comp claims b/c any injury sustained would still be subject to work comp. Traversing a hallway or staircase is a job duty (assuming you weren't snooping in an area you didn't have authorization for) and can't be eliminated from work comp coverage through warning/training (ie the employer cannot expunge liability just by posting a sign or having a policy if the action is indeed a work function).

Broken leg is your punishment for playing with the phone.
No need to make an official rule about it. Just let people kill themselves off.

and it punishes every other employee and employer as the costs of insurance goes up and up due to stupid shit like this.

.

It reduces insurance costs because now the company can fire rightfully people who are retarded. You get caught being a retard, they fire you, and you're no longer their problem. It's important they fire you before you do something stupid and get hurt 😉

Same for all safety policies. If you're caught trying to skirt the safety rules of any job, you're done. Companies don't want to deal with people who are likely to hurt themselves or others.

I hate the responses like this - a few people are idiots, and the knee jerk reaction is to treat everyone like idiots. . . . how about just fire the idiots?

under the influence of cell phone is a recognized hazard. They are banned from many work places. Safety sensitive personal are not allowed to use personal cell phones on the job only work and duty provided comm devices. All this coming to a work place near you due to insurance and liability realities.

Need a motion sensor like some cars have while backing up.

Probably wouldn't happen because of liability from people who say it didn't work properly when they got injured.

My office has a secondary wifi network that we can use our cell phones and personal computers on. Yay me!

No smartphone use? Don't they mean no dumb phone use? Take a magic marker and cross out smart and write dumb above it.

examples of dumb phone use include not watching where you are going while on the phone.

My job disallows cell phones, but only because it's not "professional" to have them out in front of customers. Nobody follows the rule anyway.
