This is hilarious. So they put up these signs all over the place "Smart phone use prohibited - no text messaging, no listening to music, no phone calls when walking"

Apparently there have been numerous accidents including a severe broken leg when somebody was texting while walking down the stairs and fell pretty bad. There have been many others and the root cause was found to be "smart phone use".

Is this really what we've come to? I wonder if me reading the news counts as dangerous behavior. Plus it's pretty damn dumb to be texting while walking up/down stairs, even if you stumble you won't be able to grab onto the guardrail because your hands/eyes are glued to your phone.

Why'd they throw the "smartphone" part in there? You can text from a dumbphone too you know.

Oh well, stupid that they should have to remind people to look where the fuck they're going anyway.

Maybe you can text 911 or security to let them know you've fallen, and can't get up?

It's hard to work a register if you are texting.

I see what you did there.

But honestly, there was a big "safety study" and it was concluded the #1 thing to help would be these signs and to prohibit smart phone use while walking.

In my office, my boss has banned "in-ear headphone" use because he does not like it when an employee has his back to him (as most of us have desks that face a wall) - and they do not hear him and he can't tell if they have headphones on. Large headphones are just fine because presumably he can tell they are essentially deaf.

My Sennheisers might just come to work with me.

I'm a dick..no cells period. Has nothing to do with slipping or falling but seems to be an added bonus but not being chatty Cathy on my dime.

an adult actually fell down stairs while texting???? OMG.. what a dumbass! That is just so stupid it defies logic. I don't blame them.. allot of productivity is lost because of texting and phones with internet access. I used to have a helper that every time I turned around he was on his phone.. he didn't last very long.

Broken leg is your punishment for playing with the phone.
No need to make an official rule about it. Just let people kill themselves off.

It is even dumber to text while driving but I see people doing this all the fucking time.

Too bad we can't outlaw stupidity.

They probably put up the signs to head off getting hit with worker's compensation claims from people "getting injured on the job" or being sued because the company didn't warn them that texting while walking down stairs was unsafe.

It doesn't take a smartphone to send a text so targetting them specifically seems odd.

Actually you can, but we shouldn't need too...

In Canada it's against the law to use a cellphone in a car (unless of course you're using bluetooth). The fines are pretty hefty too. That doesn't stop people though. I still get cut off nearly everyday by some douche blabbing or texting away. Too busy/important to give a shit about the safety of other people on the road apparently...
