New Server with AC

My boss just let me have this old server rack. The best thing about it is that it has an AC unit attached to the side. It works too. It took me two whole days to get all the other stuff out of it and unbolt it from the truck it was in.
002 is the ac unit.

Now that I have it, I am not sure what I want to do with it. I could turn it into a home server system, and use it as a media center. But I am not completely sure.

Any ideas?

 
I doubt your home server will ever be busy enough to actually need that AC unit. Just a waste of space and electricity.
 
I agree, I don't really need anything this big. I can get a 1TB NAS for cheap now. I don't need 6 computers in one spot.

But it is a really nice rack. A little dusty, but no scratches or major problems.
 
Lay it down on the ground and make it into a fancy hibernation chamber. Then, in the Summer when it's fvcking hot ... turn off the AC in your house and just use the AC inside the server rack.

You'll save like $100 a month in electric bills!!!!!

It would cause the condensation on the outside of the rack where the AC unit is, and they normally have a water tray to collect the condensation.
 
It's got a little hose coming out the bottom for condensation. And the vents for the ac are 3" in size behind the AC. Venting and getting the condensate are easy problems.

What to do with a server rack is currently my problem.

 
Sell it. The power requirements to run the AC unit AND the equipment within will be more than two power receptacles could take. I would stick it on eBay and sell it that way. Although there are a ton of EIA 19" racks on there, one with a built in AC is something unusual.

I agree, but it's such a nice rack, I would hate to sell it. Especially if I find a use for it after I sell it.

The perfect mentality of a packrat and a clutterbug. What if you don't EVER find a use for it? Then it's just junk taking up space.

Truth be told, I'd be surprised if you could GIVE that hulking thing away. If I have enough money to invest in servers requiring that amount of rack space, I have enough money to buy a rack that does look like it's been neglected for a decade.

It's not unusual at all to have AC on the cabinet. They're used exclusively in the manufacturing arena.

OP - you have no use for it.

take out the AC, buy a couple shelves, and use it as a closet?

back when my datacenter was throwing out a couple dozen racks, I almost took one home to use for that purpose, but I just couldn't justify taking up the room, not to mention the hassle of getting it to my house.
