What wasn't posted was that after I went to a LAN party and had the machine on a good 26 hours straight, and then brought it home, the temps skyrocketed. I tried the card in 3 different machines (including mine) and the temps were the same.

Besides, why are we arguing this, seeing as how the topic is not "Is geforcetony screwing us all?", its about what looks like a new rev of the NV40, thats all.

that looks a bit like photoshop, but he DOES have a custom theme installed. on one side, rollo, you arent the XFX police...but he really dosn't have anything to worry about unless he's done something wrong.
anyone who bought an XFX card must be half stupid anyway, because there is more then one post on this forum about how horrible XFX's support is, bad quality control, etc.
 
I'm surprised nV switched NV40 manufacturing to TSMC. I though they'd stick with IBM, at least with their "old" cores. Not sure if this means it was worth the initial fab cost to switch to TSMC, or if nV plans on pumping out NV40s for a while to come, or both.

My questions are thus, Tony:

1. How did you get an RMA and still keep your defective GT (with the NV5 still on it)?
2. What are you doing to your cards that three have died on you in under a year?! Maybe it's time to look at other aspects of your system, like your power supply or case cooling. Or maybe you need a UPS + voltage regulator.

Oh contraire mon frere. The card that the X800 XT PE replaced was a XFX 6800GT that cost me $390. + shipping.

If guys like Geforcetony weren't getting 5 for 1 deals, it might have been $350?

Anyway, if he's done nothing wrong he has nothing to worry about and can RMA the next one, no problem.

What you don't seem to get Rollo, is that I DONT F*CKIN WANT TO RMA THESE DAMN CARDS!!! I would rather have been going on my first one than having to pay $15 each time to ship back the damn cards. And how do you figure that I'm getting 5-for-1 deals? I'm having to lose out on time and money (my current job requires my personal computer: webmaster), and seem to be getting bad cards each time.

For your first question, I was actually lucky, as the card worked in Windows, though it would lock up from time to time, but refused to work in anything that would "stress" the card (such as DVD playback with hardware acceleration, or anything 3D). I told XFX this, and they said that they would send me a new card, and then, once I got it, I would send the defective card back. The reason for this is that I HAVE to have my computer for work, and already lost out on $150 or so because of these problems. By the way, Rollo, YES, I did send the defective card back already (today as a matter of fact), so you can't bitch at me about trying to get a free card.

For your second question, I am not doing anything to the cards. The first one worked beautifully for about 2 months, then it died. The second was DOA, and the third died about 2 weeks after getting it. Also, my case cooling, and PSU are fine. My case is an Antec Super LANBoy, with the 2 included 120mm fans, and all my cables are nice and spiffy and out of the way. My PSU is a 480w Antec, so that definitely isn't the problem. Nor is having a UPS, as I have one from APC. Also, all of my other components are quality, and the computer worked for a while with a GeForce 5700 Ultra just fine.

 
you guys shouldnt blame geforcetony for XFX's stupidity. If the idiots at XFX can't make a decent card and are too stupid to check if the card was overclocked or had been modified, its their problem

Yep- getting four defective cards in a row probably happens every days to many people- just like getting 6800GTs clocked at 374/535.

Yeah- that's the ticket! My X800XT PE came stock clocked at 534/1127, and my 6800NU came at 362/759! The stock settings of video cards are never multiples of 5!

---The first thing you did when you got the replacement was take off the stock cooler...😕

Just leave the card alone (to late now)...Well after this one dies, leave the card the way you got, don't fvck with it, who cares what he bios says and who cares about the temps...If anything happens to it then just call them up and get another.

I, nor anyone else, said that it did. The fact is, I happened to get some REALLY bad luck this time around with these cards (and the fact that XFX has a less-than-stellar reputation doesn't help either). My friend once got a Western Digital hard drive (40GB, back when that was still pretty big), and he got 6 of them bad in a row before finally settling on a Seagate one, so sh*t like this CAN happen (unfortunately).

Since when? NVIDIA's recommended stock speeds for the 6800GT are 350\500, and the 6800U are 400\550. Your point is moot.

I know, I kind of was too. Anyway, if you want to get specific about clock speeds, I call it 374MHz because that's what it shows up as in the NVIDIA control panel. Here's what RivaTuner says:

It seems to me that stock settings would rarely be such random numbers as 374/535, especially since no GT listed, well, anywhere, has mem above 500 stock, even the BFG O/C only has 370/500. As crappy a company as XFX is, I seriously doubt the validity of your "un-O/C'ed" super GT's that just happen to all crap out on you. I'm going with Rollo on this one, because it really looks like you either O/C'ed it or your system is just not up to snuff somehow (bad PSU?). Either way, after 4 shots, I'm going to have to venture to guess the blame lays on you, not XFX.

And frankly, since the damn things were overheating on you, did you ever think to drop the clocks back to what they should be?

Point taken. However, not all of the cards were overheating (only the last one). Also, maybe XFX thinks that their cards can run at those speeds, and if I'm having the problems I'm having, I would be willing to bet that I'm not the only one. Also, has anyone thought that it may be that I have an nForce3, and maybe the mobo overclocks certain cards with certain BIOS revs to specific speeds. That's probably bullshit, but weirder things have happened in my time.
 
6 Bad harddrives in a row? Come on your stories are getting less and less unbelievable. I would like to know why your coolbits ss looks diffrent from all mine and other ones on the web. We know you dorked with atleast 2 of the cards which leads us to believe you didnt stop there. Perhaps you should just be happy with the card in the first place and stop tinkering with the way they shipped it. As an owner of a computer store I still find it hard to believe on either this story or the WD HD story.

You see, crap like this happens, though it is EXTREMEMLY rare and unlikely. I, myself, am stunned and angry that it has happened to me, as this is the first time ANYTHING like this has ever happened. In fact, up until now, I have not had any RMA problems, and have only had to RMA one thing, a TI graphing calculator.
