BAH, I'd rather have the non-Type-S Acura RSX ;) (160HP, 5-speed).

That SE-R is hideously ugly while the back-end is just as plain as the regular Sentra.

Anyway, what does the Spec V offer over the standard SE-R?

The Spec offers (from what I remember) better wheels, more power, and stiffer suspension over the SE-R. Something along the lines of 180 vs. 170 bhp (though I'm sure torque numbers are probably closer). You also probably end up with a spiffy spoiler, body kit, and Spec V logo.

If I weren't so in love with the WRX and STi, I'd take the SE-R Spec V anyday.

I also like the looks of the MP3, but it's too underpowered for me. Though the Lancer is coming over soon, so let's see if that supplants the Spec V in my hierarchy of cars (sorry, it'll never beat out my baby the WRX, heh).

Well, if you wanna be smoked at a red, then be my guest ;)
The Spec V throws in a stiffer sports suspension, 180hp/180 torque due to tuned exhaust (vs. 170/175 on the SE-R), helical LSD, 6 spd, 17" wheels, nicer trimmed interior, and a whole bunch of other little itty bitty, but significant upgrades - most noticably the Spec V badge :D

What's the price tag on the Spec-V? Is it even available in the US? I haven't even seen the SE-R here yet.

If we're talking $20k + for the Spec-V, then I would without hesitation choose the much better looking 200HP RSX Type-S w/6-speed and it's high-winding VTEC-i engine. The Integra is the benchmark in the small sports hatch category.

UNDER but very close to $20,000 USD, and in limited quantities, which may lead to dealer mark-ups damnit!

NFS4:

The big selling points of the Spec V over the other models are:

- more power (180hp/180lb.ft.)
- 17" Z-rated tires
- helical limited slip differential
- 6 spd short throw manual
- upgraded interior, w/available Rockford Fosgate ~280W system w/sub
- stiffer springs/shocks
- *** SKYLINE seats ***

Those are the biggies... BTW, I believe the price is supposed to come in around 18k US.

i personally would rather have good low-end torque, rather than high revving VTEC, a la Hondas.
is the RSX even in the same class as the Sentra? pricewise?

Nissan's are generally not as ricer-friendly as Hondas.

NFS4: The SE-R and Spec-V variants will be on our shores by October/November and will be under $20K (USD). The Spec-V will have a Rockford Fostgate 10 speaker soundsystem, a helical-LSD, 180hp/tq, wicked seats, excusivity.

Also the SE-R has something the RSX doesn't, torque. Also the Spec-V is said to handle better than the Integra Type-R. The ITR was the goal that the Spec-V had to beat during the designing/engineering process.

I don't know if you are aware of the cult following that the previous Sentra SE-R had. It was nominated the 10-Best car by Car&Driver in its time. It had superb handling and power for its class yet it was cheaper and easier on the insurance. It wasn't a looker and personally I wouldn't care about that. It sure as hell could smoke most cars on the street. It did the 0-60 in mid-7s I think. The World's Fastest Sentra runs 10.3 in the 1/4mi without wheelie bars or a gutted interior.

I would go for the SE-R but its way to expensive. It will probably have a pricetag of $25K CDN and with 15% tax that will come out close to $30K, and that's not worth it..no matter how good the Sentra is.

MadIndian, the SE-R itself is an excellent value (in US, at least). ~ $17,000 USD + state tax.

it's the 15% tax that's killing you. do they charge 15% on all cars in Canada or only in your province?

It's only in our province, and its on all cars. It's a combination of the 8% provincial sales tax, and the goods and services tax (federal) of 7%.

Other provinces have different provincial sales taxes, so that 15% could be higher or lower in other provinces. Ontario has the 15% tax.

The Lancer is coming this fall, but the EVO VII probably won't appear
for another year or two for one reason or another.

I'd buy it. I have a 1995 Nissan 200SX SE-R as my current car, so I would definetly buy this one. But, I'm targeting a Maxima SE as my next car though, want something a little more upscale for my next car. :)

You can already build your own RSX on the Acura website. For comparison, a regular RSX with only a CD changer option added already pushes over 21k.

The SE-R is starting near 20k with 10 more HP and 30 lb-ft. more torque. Yes, 30 more lb.-ft of torque.

That's getting pretty close to VW GTI price, and just a few grand less than the Soobie WRX.

Choices for "pocket rockets" are now
- Nissan Sentra SE-R and Spec V
- Mazda MP3
- Soon to be Honda Civic SI
- VW GTI 1.8t
- Ford Focus SVT

And out there a little further in the price range is the Subaru WRX and Celica GT-S

Things are finally looking up for us on a budget :)

actually, i think the SE-R starts at $16 - $17k, and Spec V to be around $18k to start.

Mazda MP3 only has around 130 hp.
Civic Si comes only in hatch and has 160hp, and looks are suspect, IMO.

which leaves the Spec V as the best and most logical choice :D

The Focus SVT will sport 170HP inline 4 mated to a 6 speed tranny with a sport tuned suspension. It will be right in that 18k pricerange as well.

I dunno when it comes to high performance vehicles I'm kind of partial to Subaru's new Impreza WRX's. I'd probably need the wagon to haul stuff around but the thing has 227 hp. Considering that's 102 more hp than my current car I think I'd have a ball with that car while still being able to haul around all the stuff I'd need. They come standard with 16" wheels but you can opt for 17" wheels.
Also has antilock brakes standard. Only downside might be the extra maintenance required for the turbo.
That and the $25,000 sticker.
I do have to admit those 2002 Acura RSX's are nice too.
