New SATA HDD extermely Loud?

I just got a new prebuilt ACER PC. it has a SATA 80GB HDD. (Western digital i think...have not verified) it had windows preinstalled

anyway the HDD is EXTREMELY loud whenever accesing, at least 2x as loud as the CPU fan "high" speed... can hear it from 12ft away . it sounds like a really old 4GB HDD from 10yrs ago actually when accesing.

Im guessing this is not normal, but i am new to SATA stuff... im guessing a RMA is inorder

SATA is just an interface - it has NOTHING to do with drive mechanics which make the noise one hears when the disk actuator is busy reading and writing.

damn, looks like no way new egg will return... Contacting ACER for RMA info.. i guess i will find out how bad/good their CS is.

it is going to suck paying $$$ to send this 25lb package back...

EDIT:
HDD is a hitachi deskstar hds728080pa380

thought about the thin case. read other acer desktop reviews and heard alot of complaints about the loud fan, but none about loud HDD's. i think ups might have dropped it hard or something and it hurt the HDD.

just opened up and cables were secure

It's probably fine you know. Cheap chinese chassis' make good amplifiers for mechanical things like fixed disk drives. That's pretty good alliteration even though it bends the rules. 😉

acer is sending me a new SATA HDD (blank)

what is the best way to clone the current SATA HDD?

I can install a backup IDE HDD on the board or burn a DVD disc. software? and how exactly do i get the backup image disk installed on the new HDD? sorry never did this before...

well looking at some of the reviews of that drive some people complained about them being kinda loud. I don't trust hitachi, one went out on my bro, he sent it back, took them 2 weeks to ship a new one, and the new one was buggy from the beginning (strange noises, random system hangs....)

hope your RMA gets you a different company's drive
