I gave it one more shot this morning. I noticed that I did a format to erase everything before returning it to the store. Just for grins I re-synced it, and it is much more stable.
It did shut off once, but that could be the power settings.
I got a hold of Sansa, and they are sending me the new firmware. Even if it turns out that it isn't stable, I think I am going to stick with it, and if it comes to it, I'll RMA the device.
The tech support call left me with a good impression of Sansa.

Sorry about all the post.

Dude, keep up the posts, don't be sorry! :p
That's a bummer it shipped with crappy firmware. Glad SanDisk's CS is good though.

Keep us appraised of your impressions -- one question, how do you feel about the size?
I thought it seemed kind of big for a flash player when I read the measurements.

The size I will address right away. It ain't no Nano from any generation. However, it's built like a tank. I held the new Zen over the weekend too. The widescreen one that comes in 8GB and 16GB models, it compares well to the new Zen. The view is a lot thinner, and more narrow, but taller. I think the soon to arrive Zune flash model will be close in size as well.
It's also bigger than the e2xx series.
It seems to lockup over just a few specific songs now instead of a ton of random ones, it might be wigging out over slightly corrupt files. Hopefully the new firmware will address this too.

Bigger than e200 series? I guess you'd have to expect it with a 2.4 inch screen.

Is there any tactile feel to the scroll wheel?

Yes. There seems to be a trend to define flash based players in separate categories.
small players with no menus or sometimes no displays with minimal transport functions.
Players that offer a vivid color display, and are fully featured, yet tiny and light.
And those with big screens. This is the latter. The new Zen is this way, along with the new flash Zune.

Yes, there is a subtle tactile feel. It's mostly smooth like it was on ball bearings, but there is small bumps as you scroll. They seem like every 8th turn.

update on issues: I updated the firmware, and so far so good.
Sansa support rocks. The silver lining to the unstableness out of the box is working with their CS. They are going to make me a life long fan. Otherwise, I wouldn't have known that they care.

not until tomorrow night. It did play the included BBC one pretty good. It's not high res like an iphone, but it's pretty vivid in color. Pre-firmware update, my halo vids played okay if it didn't crash.
As of now, you can't dump any vids via drag and drop, you still have to download the media converter. I have heard that mp4's drop straight in.
The media converter is really easy to use though.

if it plays mp4's drag and drop that's all I'm interested in. the e200's series mjpeg format was pretty useless. I just want to confirm it plays xvid.

Never mind all this. F' this player. To make a long story short, it still acted up after the firmware. I called and they told me return it to BB. I did so and got another one. This one is worst than the first I got. Locks up EVERY SONG I PLAY. I have to hold the power down to shut it off, then turn it on.
Screw it, I am getting Creative or Zune flash.
