Maybe mazda got caught with their hands in the cookie jar too many times. :p

I did a search and found nothing. Apparently many 2006 model cars have lower HP ratings now due to a new SAE rating system that requires 3rd party witnessing. What's interesting though is that cars that receive an increase in HP this coming year may get a real increase bigger than just the paper spec difference (actual increase+difference in rating system). Also it seems in recent years that many engines from many different manufacturers were conservatively rated and they probably did so in anticipation of this switch over.

That would be quite the blow to Subaru (if their bhp is fine, which I think it is).

Horsepower is a unit of power, brake horsepower (bhp) is power measured at the crankshaft of the engine. He was talking about wheel hp (measured at the wheels), so I had to clarify.

Why would it hurt Subaru? For wheel hp wouldn't they add up all powered wheels?

which would still be less than a 2wd system due to the added drag of a 4wd system

and if anyone bothered reading the article it doesn't sound like it's wheel horsepower, just with all the stuff on the accessory drive connected

Well right it's gonna have more driveline loss, but IMHO that should be taken into account in hp ratings. These engines are used in the cars they are designed for, and only that. It'd be different if these were big diesels that could be used for who knows what.
