I think anyone that asks a question that is answered in a FAQ (that is posted to the AT FAQ pages) should have to include a link to the FAQs (or the specific FAQ they didnt look at) in their sig for a period of no shorter than 30 days.

Although that would help to reduce the "FAT32 OR NFTS" noise we are plagued with, it simply will not happen. Neat idea though.

No wait, I mean I'm all for it...

Have you thought about posting this in Forum Issues?

Yes, but I dont think its entirely serious. AndyHui would probably prefer that people be required to send him money though... :p

That is something I am entirely in support of.

that might not work. i dont normally ask questions that are in the FAQ but if i did, i dont think it would stop me from asking without looking in the FAQ first. youd end up with long sigs for people that dont/wont check the FAQs. its just more load on the servers.

Is it Psychological or what?
Why won't people read the FAQ's first?
Forget about the $$$ Andy.

My FAQ link is pretty short.

true, but if you wanted to link to a specific FAQ that a user didnt check, you have to create some way of linking it up so its not a lot of work to do. your link is fine, but to find a way to link to a specific Q without adding more hassle to moderators, is not as easy. i dont think its worth the time either. but i will link the FAQ's in my profile if it will help cut down on already answered threads. :)

Thanks for adding the link. I dont think this is something the mods should do, I think everyone should do it kind of on the honor system. Ask a stupid question? Help a brother out and put a link in your sig for a while.

Perhaps I forgot to put the :p at the end of my post.

You really think that I want money? I've written so many FAQs, and spent so much time on them without being paid a cent. Do you think it's too much to ask for people to go and have a read of them?

For many it takes a lot of guts to start posting. For others it is a process of ?Hey Dude you have a computer problem I know what to do, let ask the guys on AT's Forums." Therefore Looking at FAQ is not part of their Agenda.

The BBS is a culture of it own.

Did you notice that most Newcomers, don?t have their profile On.

Old timers (over thousand posts) are more polite and tend to thank for Help given.

Most people don?t bother to post feedback concerning the solution of their problem.

I could never figure out why some people make a guest appearance on the specialty Forums. They tend to answer 3 to 6 question in a raw (whether they really know the answer or not), and you never see them again.

I wonder, what is the gap between the number of posts, and general number of Hits. I.e people that read but never post.

I'll confess to that one... I often post a reply then my schedule gets hectic and I can't come back and see what the fsck happened to that thread. :-[

But seriously... how many times do we have to answer

- what's the best router
- how can I share my x computers with dsl/cable and MyOSofChoice
- Which Linux distro is best
- how can I set up a whatever server

or my personal favorite
- Can you combine 2 DSL/Cable/modems to make more bandwidth

I realize that some of these aren't in any FAQ either... but maybe we need a sticky topic/post that links to linuxdoc.org in the os and networking forums too... maybe a post bot that will look for the text "how do i" and "linux" in the same post and autogenerate a post for linuxdoc, then say RTFM, FTFF, RTMP, ROTFLMAO... RSVP, PDQ, FYI

on second thought, i got nothin

Maybe this thread and any links anyone throws in their sigs will help cut down on the number of these posts...

An age-old problem to be sure.....

My suggestion would be to have the non-faq'd poster monitor the specific offended forum, and answer their specific question (once they have the answer) for the next 25 iterations of non-faq'd posters (historically, that'd be about a week, right? Especially the "top 10.") They'd be the "Designated FAQ'er." There's enough of 'em, they could fill three or four shifts.

Their sig would have to have an FAQ reference, maybe cleverly disguised as "Free Pr0n" (Hot Cars!, Exceptionl Deals on Video Cards! ...whatever works....).

I s'pose we could just tell 'em to "FAQ Off" .....(there's a good T-shirt or hat for ya Andy.....)

Maybe change the listing to "Frequently Heard Answers (FHA)," but make it exclusive (the exclusivity would make it a desirable place), with a 1X100 queue. Then there'd be a "FHA-Queue" that they could be referred to....

Hahaha! I love the t-shirt idea. We should start a FAQ-wear fund or something for Andy ;)

As far as non-FAQ reading members answering posts by other non-FAQ reading members, they would have to beat me and Andy and the other regs to the punch or it wouldnt count :p

I'm all for it.

Get me an address and I can send some up, I have a good friend in the T-Shirt/Logowear business. Good stuff, good price. Silk screen or embroidered.

If we can decide on the "clever saying" and get permission from Anand to screen the logo ....

Let me know....

I voted no. I'm all for FAQ's but I don't think that beating people over the head with them is the answer. I don't see why stupid newbie, FAQ ignoring posts are that much of a big deal. Nobody died ... right?
It's like, why is it such a big issue. I also understand that there are many people who spend lots of time writing up the FAQs and from what I've read, they have done a good job. I just think that being militaristic about it is unfriendly and eletist that's all. I notice a lot of noobs and what seems like young kids are the ones who ask the same questions over and over, a friendly reminder might not work all the time, but nobody is obligated to help them either.

No, no one died. Its not a big deal. No, these threads are not annoying. No these threads do not litter the database with extra work or the pipes with extra worthless content wasting bandwidth. No, no one spent a lot of time and effort creating something many people just ignore. Yes, kindly asking someone to include a small little link in their sig for asking a question that hasnt been asked enough times (40028376 is enough, but the 40028375 times "NTFS or FAT32" has been asked isnt quite enough) is a little extreme, what next? Make people think or thank?! And yes, I should sit here ignoring someone that needs help.

The thread was basically a joke, brought on by frustration of newbies and old timers alike ignoring (or forgetting about) the FAQs. In these threads that are answered by the FAQs where the user ignored or forgot about them, I will start asking the original poster to create a link in their sigs. It obviously wont be a demand, since I carry no weight here, but a polite request to help other users. I have been much more lenient of newbies, and usually check how long they have been here and their post count to determine how "hot" my posts should be. I usually include links to the FAQ section or the specific FAQ if the user is fairly new.

All in all the thread was supposed to call attention to the FAQs in the hopes that newer users (and old users whose memory is fading ;)) will use them more often.

Where's the hat/t-shirt order form?

I personally liked the "Andy-gets-a-penny" from offenders. :D ;)

LMAO at the "FHA-Queue" and the "FAQ-Off"!
