New router and mixing B and G devices.

Getting tired of my old SMC dropping signal every few minutes even when I am less than 10 ft. away in the same room. THinking of getting the Linksys wireless G w/speedbooster.
Does anyone have any problems at all with this router?
I am more than willing to take suggestions on other models/brands. I just want something reliable with no dropped connections and the best range possible.

Also, I have a Linksys Wireless B Media Player (mp3/internet radio, etc.). I have heard before that mixing a B device in a G network can slow down the network. Is this true and is it a significant decrease? ALso what if the B device (media player) is powered off? I don't use it all of the time so would there be any affect if it wasn't even on?

LinkSys is always good. Having a B device on some routers can bring the speed of the entire router down to B if it's connected. If the B device is not on, then as far as the router is concerned, it doesn't exist. So I'd just power off the B device when it's not in use and you'd be fine. Some routers that have 2 antennas have one antenna dedicated to the B devices and one to the G devices. In those setups the Bs and Gs are separated so they don't affect the speeds of each other.

Did you try setting your SMC router/ap to a different channel? Are you on the latest firmware?

I don't think you'd suffer a performance hit if you mix .b and .g wireless adapters, but don't quote me on that. It would be interesting to see someone test this theory.

Well, that's a different story. I want to upgrade the firmware but I can't get into the setup page. This wireless smc is connected to a wired smc near my cable modem. i can connect to the wired one fine but I don't know what the ip is of the wireless one.
Anyone care to take a shot at how to find out?
