Unfortunately, they didn't film the scouring of the Shire.

The scouring of the Shire was anti-climactic. After the epic battle against Sauron it was hard to work up any excitement about Pippin and Merry knocking around some punks who were little more than high-school bullies stealing milk money. The film was better off without that part, it would have made a disappointing ending to a brilliant series.
In Shakespearean plays, the climax was generally one of the middle acts and the resolving act followed. ;)

Only sometimes. Typically the histories and comedies had a little resolving act following the truly important events. In the tragedies they tended to end with a bang. Even if you accept that Tolkien followed the same concept of a codicil to place everything into perspective, Return of the King already had it without the Scouring of the Shire. The battle against Sauron's forces was neatly wrapped up with the journey to the Black Gate of Mordor followed by the marriage of Aragorn and Arwen and the elves departing for the blessed isles with Frodo. That was all the resolving that was needed. Scouring of the Shire was a tacked on piece of tripe that likely even Tolkien would have disowned after a while.

When are they going to release the super deluxe set with all the three movies plus all the extras? Like the Matrix ~20 DVD set.

Supposedly at the same time the Extended Edition of Return of the King releases in mid-December. It'll feature the Extended versions of all 3 movies along with all the extra, a 12 disc set. Amazon has it for around $78.

I can't imagine that's accurate. There's no way in hell this set doesn't get out the door in plenty of time for Christmas. If you've got it pre-ordered I'd be willing to bet that it ships on December 14th or 15th.

I think you're talking about the Mouth of Sauron. He just speaks for him.

Just from his name, I wonder what other unsavory jobs this guy has to perform for the dark lord.

I'm not happy that they cut the sons of Elrond and the other Rangers who show up to travel with Aragorn through the paths of the undead, I was hoping that at worst they'd cut it for the regular movie and have it in the EE but I don't see how they could add them in...I'm also not a fan of the undead as they weren't supposed to be a physical threat, just a mental one but whatever, it does make for some hilarious battle scenes.

Where does that come from ? Aren't there references in the book to a Rohan king that dies at their hand ?

Also, how are we supposed to know technical details about something that isn't real, and that we get the info 2nd or 3rd hand ?

I mean, Tolkien gets his info from historical accounts like Frodo's diary, ancient tomes, etc. How do we know the information in those documents is 100% accurate ?

I mean Frodo wrote the accounts of the incident you are arguing about, but he wasn't there. This means Frodo could only know about them by talking to Araghorn, Gimly, or someone they talked too, he wasn't an eyewitness.

From what I remember the book describes the undead as a force of mental terror. Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas, Elrond's two sons, and the other Rangers are the physical threat or reinforcements rather. Maybe I got the wrong impression when reading the book, or perhaps I was too tired from staying up late to read through ROTK, but from what I understood all the undead forces offered was a service of undeniable fear - a litteral "scared to death" type of force that helped Aragorn take over the ships stopping those enemy reinforcements and supplying his own pressence on the battlefield...of which all that Numenorian blood definately helped to supply some effective reinforcements. I was expecting more of a scene such as when Theodin rode out to meet the enemy and because of that element of suprise and mighty act of heroism they were impossibly cutting down overwhelming foes with ease.

Unless I'm completely wrong on this I believe the reason Jackson went with the scene as he did is because it would be easier for the audience to understand how they overcame the impossible odds whereas Tolkien would provide a solution such as "the king and his few knights rode out against a sea of enemies and prevailed"

Am I wrong on this? I don't consider myself and expert or even enthusiast towards such subject matter its just what I took from the story, even if I am completely wrong on the matter and the scene is 100% on with how Tolkien would have wanted it I still would not have liked it as it definately seemed overly cheesy. The turn in the tide witht he undead was too easy and they should have been used to whipe out the rest of the enemy but I don't even think they could have been used in such a fashion because I don't believe they had the ability in the first place. I never interpretted Aragorns path through the undead as one to gather an invincible and unstoppable army to save the day but rather it was a final path towards reclaiming kingship he simply had to take.

I dunno, I need to sit down and read ROTK again...
