Go for a V7700 or even just a 3870 with GDDR4 for much better performance.

Make sure you get a solid PSU to power everything.

Core i7 920 outperforms C2Q 9550 by about 35% in 3dsmax, 20% in AT's Photoshop test, and 10-40% in various video encoding benchmarks.

Yeap. This guy is the prime candidate for a lower-totem-pole professional graphics card (ie; FireGL or Quadro of modern but not expensive variety), combined with an i7, lots of fast DDR3, and very fast disk setup. CPU, memory, and disk get hammered by these apps, video card not so much. Better to have 100% professional compatibility and a bit less potential GPU rendering ability, than to have to resort to hacks or just plain missing features in the drivers.

Sad, as the GPUs on the cards are identical, but the bios and drivers artificially limit features beneficial to apps such as 3dsm and Maya.
