I'm in the market to build a new system. My current system is a few years old and has the following:

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (939)
1024mb PC3200
X800 XT AIW
WD Raptor 36 gigabyte OS drive

I've been "out of the loop" for a bit now, and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a base to build off of. (i.e. motherboard/processor/video card/memory) I was looking at an AM2 X2 with the new price drops, but the Conroe seems appealing as well. Thanks.

Conroe is appealing for its performance and kick AMD's ass. By the way, what's the budget for new rig?

Conroe is appealing but buying Intel would make me feel dirty :) Then again who knows?

My budget, eh, whatever I suppose. $2000-2500 maybe? I'm not looking for SLI or Crossfire if that matters, I think I may get a GTX2 card.

IMHO, that rig can last you another year with just a gfx card upgrade and another gb of RAM. By that time, c2d will have set the bar, and you can think about k8l at that time. Another suggestion would be to overclock and get a new cpu cooler. That way there won't be much of a chance that your cpu will be the bottleneck, unless games evolve radically. What's your MoBo? If you have an sli/crossfire MoBo, then even your gpu probably wont be a bottleneck. Then again, what's your monitor?

I just think that that system, being like a year or two old, shouldn't be replaced. Not that you should pass up c2d, but you should pass up c2d... for now. Wait a while, you don't need a cpu upgrade just yet. Save the conroe chips for someone who's currently running a p2 250mhz;)

Ha, Well, I'm going for a complete overhaul, the monitor is a Viewsonic 19" CRT. My father is taking the system and possibly putting in a new processor and he's satisfied. I myself don't think I'm going to wait because of convenience and all. I'm also looking at a 20 inch widescreen and haven't made a decision there/
