New Rig Time...

Hey all, i'm looking to move into the 64-bit arena soon... seems looking on these boards every day makes you realise when you need to upgrade!

I need to clear a few things up first...

1. For motherboard, is the DFI Infinity NF3-250Gb worth waiting for? It's due out next month, and as I currently have a Lanparty NF2-Ultra400, I know how much DFI's boards rock! The chipset has to be NF3-250Gb though, I need the Gb LAN and hardware firewall!

2. For memory, 1GB of the stuff is needed, I drew up a shortlist, and by cutting it down, managed to get to either Kingston's PC3200 HyperX for £200, or OCZ's Enhanced Bandwidth PC3200 for around £250. The Corsair TwinX3200XLPro is about £250 too, this is a possibility. Which is the best for the money?

3. Video card. Atm i'm pulled towards the X800XT Platinum Edition, money isn't a massive problem on this component, I want something very fast and cost-effective. Suggestions?

4. For the CPU, it's got to be one of the 3200/3400 A64 models. I've got the 3200 Newcastle (512/2.2GHz) vs the 3200 Clawhammer (1024/2Ghz) vs the 3400 Clawhammer (1024/2.2GHz). I'd prefer one of the 3200s, but i'm still torn on whether the extra cache or speed will make the biggest difference. Personally, I think the cache is more likely to benefit, but what do you all think?

This rig is for games. Doom 3, Halflife 2, it's got to be able to pull the frames and look good. I'm not planning on overclocking, i'm using some of the components from my current PC in the new one:

- Thermalright ALX-800 h/s with YS-Tech 80mm fan
- DVD Drive and CDRW Drive
- 2xWD Raptor 36GB in RAID 0 w/250GB Maxtor MaxlineIII Plus 16MB NCQ (I only have one raptor atm)
- 460W Akasa PSU, MX510, USB Keyboard, 17in TFT Monitor

I live in the UK, so suggestions from NewEgg and the like are useless to me.

Thanks for your help in advance,

Tute

1. Wait for the Infinity. DFI boards do rock.
2. RAM speed is not a huge issue with A64; as long as the HyperX works with your motherboard, get it.
3. The 6800GT is more cost effective than any other next gen card right now, but if you have the money, X800XT PE is a nice way to blow it.
4. If you aren't overclocking, get a 3400 Clawhammer.

I don't think the ALX-800 will fit on A64 motherboards.

Looking on the Thermalright site, it appears you're correct. Damn.

Well, an SLK948-U with an even bigger fan will have to do.
