Hi All,

Just put together a new system,

spec is,

enermax noisetake 480W |PSU
Asus A8n-sli delux mobo
athlon 3700+ sandiego
2*gskill 512mb
radeon x850 xt pe Graphics card
plextor p16 DVDRW (pata)

All seems fine, system is stable and games look damn good and smooth as expected.

The problem lies with video output.

I noticed that dvd playback is terrible with frames being dropped all over the place resulting in a slightly stuttering playback. (LOTR part 3)
Ive tried about 4 divx too, 3 of these were fine but in one, when transitioning between scenes I notice a hessian like grid that appears for about a quarter of a second that was not apparent on my previous rig.

Anyone any ideas at all?
Much appreciated for any replies.

From what I've seen, video playback issues tend to be codec-related rather than the result of a hardware problem. What software are you using for playback, and what codecs do your files require?

If you don't have it already, use gspot to analyze your divx files.

thanks much for the reply,

Codecs I am using are latest klite ones, must admit the DVD player was some freeware one I downloaded to test, probably terrible.

Im going to reinstall everything later somewhat more methodically, install power dvd and run some benchmarks, will then post results. In the meantime could I possibly ask what codecs you use. I stuck with klite codecs since i used to use the nimo codec pack but they seemed to stop supporting certain files, are there any better ones nowadays??

Well, i think you answered your own question.

Your Plextor drive shoulda come with a DVD decoder if it was retail. (WinDVD, Power DVD, etc.)

Install that & try watching a movie then. I wouldn't trust an unknown DVD decoder to do a good job.

I use the K-Lite codec pack myself, but every once & a while i'll get a problem with some program, especially XviD stuff.

I think next time i reformat i'll be installing each codec i need manually.
Use the G-Spot Codec Appliance Tool to identify what codecs you need :)

Thanks for the replies all, should have been more thorough,

Noticed on my old PC the drive had dropped to pio mode and was doing the same thing.

On new PC, installed latest nvidia drivers instead of ones that came with mobo, installed power dvd, noticed that after installing nvidia drivers, Plextor went from udma2 to udma4, now running beautifully, also swapped 40 pin for 80 pin too.
