New rig: most games cause shut down

Just put together:

A64 3200+
Asus A8V Deluxe
XFX Geforce 6600GT AGP
1GB PQI Ram

Now I am a layman so do excuse my crude description/analysis.

When running certain games, before even being able to start playing, my monitor will go black like there is no video signal and the music will stop a couple of seconds afterwards. As I say, this is before the game proper manages to start. It seems to be in a similar place with each game. In Grand Theft Auto Vice City it happens just after clicking to start a game when the intro of the first mission begins to play. I see and hear two characters talking in a scripted scene for all of say three seconds, then monitor is in standby.

Similar with Hitman 2. I click to start a game. The title of the first chapter comes up, "Sicily," I see the first second or two of the into movie, then screen black.

In Deus Ex: Invisible War the screen gles black before I can even do much in the opening menu. I pretty much just move my mouse and its gone.

The only other game I have to test it with is Sim City 4. This plays fine. I note that its a different type of game, graphics wise. The ones that crash are all these 3D first person kind of games. Does that give a clue as to the problem?

On each occassion my system still has the lights on and stuff. I can still hear things spinning.

Thanks for any help guys.

Welcome to the Forums 🙂 What brand and model of power supply is running the show (sort of) there? If you need a hand ID'ing it, the label on the side of the power supply will have the brand & model.

Also, what memory voltage are you using, AUTO? or a manually-set voltage? Does the video card have its power-supply cable hooked up (yeah I know, dumb question 😀)?

Wow. Just ... wow. Its a wonder I even figured out how to post 😱 They let anyone guild a system these days. May be next time Ill get a Dell. LOL.

Anyway, that was quick and embarrasingly simple. Thanks for ya help 🙂

Im suprised I had a picture even in windows though. Is the power connection just for 3D or something?

I think it varies depending on what card it is, but I'm not sure. Some cards I think they won't even show the POST screen without their power cable. Anyway, glad it was something quick to fix 🙂
