New Rig Help

I am not sure if this is the right place for a topic such as this, but it's hardware related, so here goes! And if this isn't place, please forgive me!

I just bought the latest and greatest GeForce FX5900, and I am wondering if you guys could direct me to which CPU I should go, i.e., Intel or AMD.

Intel's got 800MHZ FSB out right now, while AMD has 400MHZ FSB.

What do you guys recommend for a high end gaming system?

Thanks,

M

I recommend the P4 3GHz w/HT. Although I'm sure this may turn into a flame war (Intel vs AMD)

I certainly don't want it to be a flame war, rather, if you all could provide me with the benefits of both, or direct me to where I can easily obtain this information. I just want to build a SWEET gaming system... 🙂

Just search the forums. The 2.4C P4 and the XP2500 are very common around here for the CPU. For the cost, these 2 are your best bet.

Use the search botton, you will find everything you need.

I would recommend a P4 system.

Abit IC7-G or Asus P4C800-E
2.4-3.0C P4/800Mhz FSB
Corsair or Hyperx 3200-3500

Then I would send the 5900 back and get a 9800pro so I could play HL2.

Depends how much you want to spend. A 90 dollar 2500+ barton will get you some very good performance in games. However so will a 2.4c for 170 dollars.

And Ditto : Search the forums. Lots of info to be read!

AGREED Get a 9800Pro! HAvENT YOU READ THE HL2 NEWS? 😉

Who cares abaout HL... Stay on topic, will ya? Didn't ask about the video card, asked about everything else.

I see how easy it is to start a flame.

My apologies...

Although I'm an AMD fan, between the XP and P4 I would reccomend the P4 (800FSB) simply because it is, hands-down, the more powerful CPU. If you're looking for bang for the buck, then AMD is the hands-down winner.

Now you may want to look at an Opteron solution (or Athlon64 in a few weeks), these CPUs have proven even more powerful than the mighty P4. A word of warning though, the Opterons yet require registered DIMMs (I could be wrong, anyone feel free to correct me), which tend to run at quite a premium.

A final recommendation would be to, if possible, drop the 5900 and go with the Radeon 9800, it has proven far superior to the 5900, especially with DX9. Happy building!

There isn't any flaming going on. People are simply giving you suggestions of what should be in a "sweet" gaming rig.
You should go to the front page and check out reviews of different boards/cpu.

This may help. You should probably check out the 3.0C review and the XP3000 also.

He didn't ask about video cards... Besides, for all you guys know, he only plays AMerica's Army, and nothing else, and the 5900 is the best for that.

Answer his question...

Get a 3.2C.

We didn't mean to talk bad about Nvidia Nebor. Don't get upset.

You are right about the 3.2 though. You shouldn't buy a 2.4 for your "dream" system and hope to overclock it to "dream" levels. Start fast from the beginning. Then Overclock.

If you have money, get an 875p, or 865 PE, and a 2.8-3.2c Intel (I recommend DFI for 875p, and MSI for 865PE), or if your strapped for cash, get the Abit Nf7-S, ot the DFI Lan Party mobo with an XP2500 and juice it to an XP3200. Pretty simple.

3.2c? What's that? Celeron? No way (if that's what you're referring to! 😛)

Aren't Opteron's MEGA-bucks right now?

Also, I don't know what benchmarking information you have heard regarding the 5900 Ultra and 9800 Pro, but what I have seen from Tom's Hardware is that the Ultra marginally beat the 9800 Pro. But anyway...

Thanks for your information!! Just get back to me letting me know what the 3.2c is... 🙂

Thanks again,

M

Hah. No they do not mean celeron's. The C model P4 comes with Hyperthreading and a 800 MHz front side bus. Which is top-o-line. Others like the P4 2.4-2.6A's may only come with a 533 Mhz bus and no HT.

You will then need a mobo that supports the Intel P4c's like the ones mentioned above accompanied with at least 2 DIMM's of PC3200 (400 MHz Rated) ram.

And forget about the video card for now, that is a shite storm of itself. Save that issue for other topics.

I have looked around. Can you any of you point me a direction to where I should purchase this (P4c) for the best price?

Well, the Opterons do get into some big bucks for the premium models, but they start at just over $250. Wheheas that's not exactly cheap, I wouldn't call it big bucks either.

AMD is fine if your on a budget but if you want a real gaming machine there really is only one choice and that is Intel. Look at 2.8 and above with 800MHZ FSB and you will have a good high end machine.

Wrong.....the P4 A's have a 400FSB, the B's have 533 FSB
