New Rig Build

Hi

Im thinking about building a new rig and am looking at the components below.

AMD 64 3200/3500+
Asus A8N- Deluxe /MSI K8N Neo4 Plat
X800XL/7800GT
2 X 300gb Seagate 7200.8
Enermax/Antec psu

at the moment i have a normal 17 crt but in the future might buy a 2005FPW

is it justifiable to get the 7800gt over the XL seeing as it is only around 70 more?

btw im in uk and so some availabilty of parts is difficult.

I cant use a DFI mobo cos i will be using generic 3200 ram.

im not a hardcore gamer but would like to play hl2, doom3 etc at one point as my current machine cannot handle any new games.

any suggestions are greatly welcome.

go with the 3200+ Venice core and i'd go for the GT cause it a newer GPU generation and more powerful. That is reasonable cause the save in $$ from 3500+ to 3200+ can go to the card. But your OC will be limited with generic ram and that mobo.

yessir, i agree. what ram are you using??? if you don't have the ram yet look at some OCZ value together with the DFI board it will work great, the other option is some Corsair Value. The Corsair is great also, it just doesn't seem to get the same results as the OCZ in the DFI board.
 
I would just go with a 3000+ and overclock it. Then you can spend the money saved on a better video card, more RAM or whateever else you desire. For the mobo I highly suggest the Epox 9NPA+ Ultra board. Here is what Anandtech had to say about it.

It is a very good overclocker and IMO is the best overall board. If you want thew best overclocking board you want the DFI NF4 Ultra-D. However it may take a little bit of tweaking to get it to work properly, even at stock speeds.

As for the video card the 7800GT is a much more powerful card then the X800XL. If you can afford it get it. eVGA has a bundle where you can get it with BF2. However what is the max resolution of your 17" CRT? Like 1280x1024? If so you won't really be taking advantage of the 7800GT.

If you were planning on running RAID-0 wit5h those two drives I would forget about it.

If you haven't gotten the hint by now, we'll spell it out for you: there is no place, and no need for a RAID-0 array on a desktop computer. The real world performance increases are negligible at best and the reduction in reliability, thanks to a halving of the mean time between failure, makes RAID-0 far from worth it on the desktop.

I prefer having an ~80GB for OS, applications and games. Then having a very large second drive just for storage such as music etc.

As for the PSU I would highly suggest a Fortron AX500-A. It was $78 the last time I recall at actbuy.
 
get the msi neo plat 4 and an amd64 3800 X2 or a 3000 Venice Core. If your looking to build an SLi rig, I read good things about the Enermax EG565P-VE 535w SLi certified or the Antec True Power II 550w is always a solid choice. I just got a Dell 1905fp 19' lcd for about 300 after a coupon code and so far its excellent, that could be a cheaper alternative to the 2005FPW
